p24-1953 Posted December 2, 2017 Report Posted December 2, 2017 I have a fresh rebuild on my generator but when in have lights , heater and defrost on it shows a negative draw while driving. Is there a way to increase the stock generators output? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 2, 2017 Report Posted December 2, 2017 with the generator, the output is going to go negative when idle with heavy current draw.....that is one of the very shortcomings of the generator...it needs RPM to generate their higher outputs...read the manual as the regulator adjustments are covered in great detail...upping the limits at the lower end will cause higher output at the upper end of rpm...you may overheat and "lead" your generator if the output is too great....this low current at low rpm is the very reason the alternator came about, providing higher current at idle to overcome the additional electrical requirements as the cars advanced with more electrical accessories. 2 Quote
greg g Posted December 2, 2017 Report Posted December 2, 2017 What kind of shape is your wireing in. Loose or corroded connections, and iffy grounds can add a lot of resistance to your circuits. Make sure everything's clean and tight. You can add relays to your head lights which may help a bit. You can also clean your voltage regulator points. Get a points file, don't use sand paper, or Emory cloth, they can leave abrasive particles behind which will cause more problems. Take off the cover and give them a couple swipes. Disconnect the battery before. 1 1 Quote
