Dan Hiebert Posted November 10, 2017 Report Posted November 10, 2017 (edited) Every November 10 since they recovered the Big Fitz' ship's bell, they toll it once for each crewmember lost. They tolled it at the mariner's church in Detroit before that. It's at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, MI. I remember the news, and later the song when it came out. We went to the ceremony once when I was stationed at Detroit. Kind of a melancholy feeling to stand at Whitefish Point looking out over Lake Superior when they toll that bell after hearing the song all those years, not understanding just how vast the Great Lakes are. The museum is up on the bluff above the lake, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank 20 miles out, so where it sank is just at the horizon. Edited November 10, 2017 by Dan Hiebert Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 10, 2017 Author Report Posted November 10, 2017 seems every year I forget to post this while I put it out a bit early before I forget....sad occasion for sure...the swap meet is next couple days, my friends are here to spend the weekend and attend. We started out the festivities with a low country boil and dessert was crab legs...roll me to the door, I'll crawl from there.... Quote
