Dennis Detweiler Posted October 22, 2017 Report Posted October 22, 2017 Is it ok to add a screw-in fuel filter onto the CarterBB-R carb? Pro's or con's? If ok, which model number filter will fit it? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 22, 2017 Report Posted October 22, 2017 Can this be done and not interfere with the needle and seat? Most BB carbs use a flare fitting for sealing to the input which is the needle/seat assembly....as long as the threads match and flare fitted it should seal without interrupting the float operation...I would not see any problems with this I do not know of a flare fit screw in filter offhand Quote
knuckleharley Posted October 22, 2017 Report Posted October 22, 2017 Not a direct reply to your question, but another question instead. Why would you want to put a fuel filter at the carb instead of between the gas tank and the fuel pump? Why not protect both your fuel pump and your carb at the same time? 1 Quote
_shel_ny Posted October 22, 2017 Report Posted October 22, 2017 At one time I used a screw in filter at the fuel pump. The flex line from the frame fitting to the pump was modified to use the filter. Quote

Carb side is flare, other side is a pipe thread that goes into the the body of the filter holder. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 22, 2017 Report Posted October 22, 2017 sediment bowls I have seen....the filter as is common to many later GM that thread into the carb body and similar in looks as the one Shel NY posted is not common to the B&B As shown, this adapter along with a union could fit the bill...thanks for the post of the adapter. Dennis Detweiler Posted October 23, 2017 Author Report Posted October 23, 2017 My fuel pump has a screen and sediment bowl which I assume filters before going through the pump? I want to add extra protection and a more fine filter entering the carb. When I bought the car 6 wks ago, the pump was loose and pouring oil out of the crankcase. The old pump also had no gasket or screen in it? Flakey! I installed a new pump and will add an extra filter at the carb. Thanks for the info! Quote

Yes it does, but I always thought the sediment bulb was as much to allow the owner to dump out water as it was to filter particles. Not sure how effective it is when compared to modern filters, but it has to beat the hell out of no filter at all. Quote
