Transmission questions

Ok so I'm new here and I'm not sure but I have a 1947 Plymouth special deluxe coupe but motor is no good tranny seems to be OK but I bought a running 1952 desoto 252 with a fluid drive but my question I will the 3 speed off the 218 work on the desoto

Yes but you'll have to swap the input shaft as the fluid drive's is a lot longer

A DeSoto motor is about 25 inches long; Plymouth's is 23 inches.  Don Coatney put a DeSoto engine in a Plymouth, and the info is here somewhere.  It took some modifications to fit.

Your existing bellhousing is OK but expect some issues if you use the 218 flywheel....start with a 'normal' wheel (anything but the 201-208-218)  and save some work.

You say you have a Desoto  with fluid drive, but what transmission does it have? Its not a trick question, fluid drive is not a transmission.

The shorter input shaft and correct retainer are available on ebay as a pair.

couldn't you just the using the transmission, bell housing, linkage, clutch pressure plate, flywheel and clutch from the 47 motor on the Desoto motor?  forget about the fluid drive completely.  if the Desoto motor is a 25 incher, may have to alter the radiator

As was mentioned if you use the 218 flywheel bolted to the Desoto crankshaft the crankshaft offset is different and your starter will not mesh correctly with the flywheel. I had to modify the 218 bell housing as pictured below to correct this problem.
