Hello and Desoto fluid drive problem

Recommended Posts

Firstly hello from sunny Cornwall in the UK

I have a 1947 desoto custom with a fluid drive transmission in really enjoying driving this car around

But I'm having trouble with my gearbox

In high range it is slow to change up I drive it as normal then when I want it to change up I have to lift off the gas and waiting at least ten seconds for the box to change up

I have checked and topped up the oil level

anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong with it

thanks in advance

Should take about a second... maybe two to shift   seems longer if you are in a hurry.  Is it possible someone has substituted a heavier oil  than the SAE 10  which is called for ?

Also check the connections n the govorner and solenoid.  Corrosion could be causing resistance, clean and tight makes for happy motoring.   The Imperial club website has a host of semi auto care and feeding info in the repair and maintenance section.

I just lowered the Idle from 770 RPM to 450 RPM today on a 1949 Coronet with fluid drive.  The car now shifts perfectly.

Note: I set the idle with the car idling in gear with a friend inside holding the brake....  The idle did fluctuate between 450-480 RPM.  But I do have a very sensitive digital timing light....

Best of luck, I hope that our suggestions here on your topic help you out.

Brilliant it's working

today I lowered the idle down to around 450

And now it changes up in about 2 seconds that's so much better

Thank-you all for your advice
