glendale Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 so iI am installing a chromed head,t5,langdon hei, and an edmunds intake on a 38 plymouth. I fired it up today for a few seconds and then started adding water. i have water shooting out of the block between the head and block near the water pump. i just realized i did not put rtv on any head bolts. could that be the problem? specifically coming out here. Merle Coggins Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 That's about where the internal bypass port would be if the block is so equipped. That would also account for the leakage you describe. It's hard to see in your pictures if it is or not. Is it the original '38 block or a later model engine block with internal bypass? Quote
glendale Posted August 26, 2016 Author Report Posted August 26, 2016 it is not my car it's a buddies. but I believe it's a 46-48 block. Quote
glendale Posted August 26, 2016 Author Report Posted August 26, 2016 some pics of the og head and gasket. and this is a spare head that i had machined before i found the chrome one. so now i see the difference. can i do anything to run the chrome head? Quote
Young Ed Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 you'll need to remove it and plug that hole. I think someone on here tapped it and plugged it. 1 Quote
glendale Posted August 26, 2016 Author Report Posted August 26, 2016 thank you that is what I was assuming but this car has tested me every step of the way! Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 you'll need to remove it and plug that hole. I think someone on here tapped it and plugged it. Yes , that was over on the truck side of the forum . Quote
dpollo Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 The hole can be tapped 9/16 national fine or, use the later gasket which will seal the hole against the block. Quote
glendale Posted August 26, 2016 Author Report Posted August 26, 2016 what year head gasket? i have to replace it any way. Quote
JD luxury liner Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 spray the new gasket with a gasket coating I used coppercoat. I also had to do the head removal twice. 1 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted August 26, 2016 Report Posted August 26, 2016 It appears that your original head gasket has the hole for the internal bypass port but the head doesn't. And your "spare" head has the port. It seems that you have a mismatch of parts there. But I'm guessing you'll be pulling the head to investigate further, and possibly plug a hole. Merle Quote
dpollo Posted August 28, 2016 Report Posted August 28, 2016 51 to 59, but only if the head has the extra passage and not the block. You can also seal off the block passage by using the back cover from an earlier than 51 water pump. Quote

Pictured below is an external by pass backing plate with the hole blocked off. Pictured here is a gasket for an internal by pass pump with the hole open. Quote
plymjim Posted September 8, 2016 Report Posted September 8, 2016 Couple of days late here but look at my post "bad head gasket" if you're still looking for an answer. The head gasket I used to block this hole/leak came from Auto Zone. Felpro '53 Plym. #075550. Plymjim Quote
