BobT-47P15 Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 Hi guys.............Hope everyone is doing well. If the differential on one's car begins making noise and overheating.....what process does a person need to do to determine the problem and fix it? Where do you buy gasket(s) for the pumpkin.....where do you buy new gears to replace any that show wear or damage? Thanks for any input. Bob Quote
knuckleharley Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 I bought NOS 3:73 ring and pinion gears for my 42 off of ebay. The gaskets can be easily made if you can't find new ones,or you can just use the blue liquid gasket in a tube. If it were me and I went that far,I would replace the inner and outer bearings with new ones, also. It's a lot of work to do all that and then have to take it apart a year or two later to replace the bearings. You should be able to buy the bearings easily by using the numbers on the old ones. Quote
_shel_ny Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 First would be to see if there is any gear lube in there. 1 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 1, 2016 Report Posted May 1, 2016 odds are with the HEAT being in the descriptor one may have already fried the rear end with a lack of lubricant. As stated...ascertain the oil level and if low..fill and see if the gear gods are smiling in your favor...if damaged, a complete swap out hog head would be quickest and easiest and more than not the lower cost long term repair,.. Young Ed Posted May 2, 2016 Report Posted May 2, 2016 Time to replace that oddball rear end with a proper p15 one Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted May 2, 2016 Report Posted May 2, 2016 I'm thinking that if he got down under and touched the differential to find that it was hot , he probably also tried to touch the gear oil with his finger after pulling the fill plug . Quote
BigDaddyO Posted May 2, 2016 Report Posted May 2, 2016 The 'making noise' part has me thinking the party is over for that differential, or at least the bearings. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 2, 2016 Author Report Posted May 2, 2016 Thanks fellows. I am asking in behalf of a friend. MY problem is I need to replace the entire rear end to change the gear ratio to something a bit higher since (best I can determine) my differential came out of probably a 1939 Dodge pickup. The rear wheel cylinders are larger than those found on a P15. Quote
