Shifting issues

My 51 B3B has shifting issues... hard to get into low, sometimes, without going, first, to other gears. I'm thinking sloppy, worn linkages but my mechanic pal thinks clutch and/or trans. Also, I must double clutch between first and second and sometimes to third. What are your thoughts/experience?

TIA

Paul,

There's a little known adjustment for just that. The adjustment allows the shift lever (the steel cane looking part) to lift the cane more so that the transmission has an easier time finding first (and reverse) Hope that's all it is and you get it shifting properly.

Thank you, Hank, but from the diagram I cant tell where the adjustment might be....??

Thanks, Merle. I suspect you are right but, hopefully Hank has an alternative if I can just figure out the adjustment he is suggesting.

Can't speak with any authority on this....but my syncro 4 speed has some wear in the internal shifting mechanism that sometimes makes it fussy to get into third. Get a clean shift (most of the time) and it goes into gear just fine. I am certain the syncro rings in mine are fine. It is slop in the shifter mechanism that is causing my shifting issue. Could be you have something similar going on?

My initial thought was the same as GTK as to whether you have a sync or crash box.

How much free travel do you have in your clutch pedal? Your case could just simply be a matter of adjusting your pedal at the 'collar 6-45-3'.

This was my problem. I didn't know the square block was threaded so that one adjusts the linkage with the block, then lock it with the nut.
