Just pulled oil pan, some sludge in the sump area, not that bad, but not good either.

I have the bottom end open, so will have a good look at things. I am not planning on pulling mains or rod bearing caps or anything though.

That piece of iron in the last pic part of a sleeve or part of the cylinder wall?

Neither Dave, was hanging on the block in crud and fell off when oil pan was pulled.

Appears to be a part of a glass bottle....

Well there's your problem.... Some one forgot to open the oil bottle and just shoved the whole bottle down the fill tube.

If you're not pulling bottom caps I'd say you had the good look at things.

Not much to see without the caps off...unless you have a broken piston skirt, or actual stuck debris in the oil pan. It's no big deal to pull and replace the caps....they torque individually anyway....be good to see how bearings look.

And you can easily Plastigage them to check wear.

All buttoned up, cleaned out oil filter, fresh Klondike 15W40 Heavy Duty oil, even has .14 zinc, not that I care.

Wonder how long the oil will look clean now, used to get black fast.....
