Hi, new to the forum. I have a 51 b3b truck. I'm replacing the fuel tank. My question is this. Do you need to use the springs and bolts or can it be bolted to the frame directly. Thanks for any input.

Yes you should use the same type of mounting hardware as original. There is a fair amount of flex designed into these old frames and a lot of it occurs in the mid section right where the tank is.

Hope this helps, Jeff

  1. thanks for the info.if anyone has some pics that would be helpful. unfortunately the phone I used to take pics of the truck before I disassembled it has been destroyed by fire.. my memory is not so good anymore.

I believe on my truck the rear tank flange sits on top of the rear mount and the bolts are tightened just enough to keep some spring tension on it.

If I had a picture of it I can't find it.

I left the mounting bracket with original bolts and springs on the tank when I removed it.

You will need to zoom in to see the placement of the bolt and spring which follows the 1st photo of the manual page that Desotodav provided above.

My bolts / springs were frozen in place with rust and need to be replaced so new gas tank bolts and springs are on my to acquire list

UPDATE: found one of the seller's original photos that show how the rear flange mounts on top of the rear mount as Merle mentioned in post #6.

I had to cheat a little with that tank in the 53 (photo at post #5) as I used metric 'rivnut' inserts because the tank bracket mount area was damaged.

Here is a photo of the tank setup before I restored the 52 truck... (the nuts at the bottom of the bolts were not really required to be there)...

The tank on the 53 looks a bit different than the earlier ones and mounts with the rear flange under the frame. I'm not quit sure how the forward flange with the springs attaches. There are no reference photos in the shop manual.

Has anybody used the new 39 to 47 truck fuel tank by Tanks, if so what modification is needed to use on a 48 b1b truck. Thanks
