Good run Robin.  Is that a 1/4 mile track like drag strips here in the U.S.?

I think my fastest in the quarter mile back in 2005 was 57 mph.......and I was taking it kind of easy on

the start to avoid messing up either clutch or trans.  And there are no hop-ups on my engine except a

regular .030 overbore.

I can see a performance thread being started.

Not an official track timing in any way, shape or form, but I have used the "car performance" Android App to see what my car could do on a reasonably straight and level road with little traffic and no signals. Average on a couple different times over a couple of different years my '33 in stock form including the crash box tranny (sychros were introduced on Plymouth in '35) has me at 54.75 MPH at the end of a quarter mile.

I strongly suspect that on the sand where Robin was running I'd have trouble exceeding 60 or 65 MPH regardless of the run up distance.

I believe the Sands deal is a top speed through a measured area after a measured run up, not a drag race.  The Race of Gentlemen in New Jersey is a two lane 1/8th mile acceleration contest.  I would think the sand is probably 3 to 5 mph slower than the same length of a paved surface.

Hi 61Farnham, I see that you only live up the road from me. I loved your Pictures of Pendine, That's my mate Darren in car 385. its a small world. I'm down in Bournemouth.

It is a small world, look forward to seeing your new ride.

Yes, it's a speed trial.

Half mile run up. Timed through 1/16th mile.

Having now made 9 runs at Pendine I can vouch for the fact that the sand costs a lot of speed.

But it's not only the resistance the sand offers against top speed that's the problem. In lower gears it's very hard to get the speeds up high enough to make the most of the power band after shifting up. There's a gap between maximum speed in 2nd and optimum speed for shifting into 3rd.

Although this year's run on Saturday (in the video) was my best so far, I could feel the car bogging down after shifting into top.

On the road, that's no problem.

I was still accelerating coming out of the time traps, so it's now a case of trying to find that acceleration earlier, to see if I can break the 80mph barrier.

Robin,

Sounds like you should put in an Overdrive in your car, not because of the RPM reduction in high gear, but because 2nd over is a nice split between 2nd direct and 3rd direct........

I have an OD, Marty.

And have tried exactly that on a few of my runs.

But I have fast second ratio, so the split is not quite where it would work to best effect... so I just ran out of track.

Sorry, didn't remember that you had an OD in a fast 2nd transmission.  Maybe if you really want to go after it you should make a standard ratio transmission for the OD, which would give you less drop going into 2nd gear, then a nice drop into 2nd over followed by 3rd straight ........  I find that 2nd over is a great gear for getting onto the freeway, then I just shift into 3rd over and cruise.
