how was the hood originally sealed? I keep getting the #1 and 2 spark plug dimples filled with water when it rains, but I can't see any sign of rubber or canvas on the hood.

They come up on eBay occasionally. RockAuto sells a set of plug wires that comes with rubber washers on the wires, kinda the same idea as the everdry kits, only cheaper.

Bach4660,

Do you have the cowl welting? There should be a strip across the cowl that seals the hood edge to the cowl (sort of). That stuff is available from different sources in the original canvas or rubber.

Mine is in good shape, but I still get a little water. The butterfly hoods don't make for a very watertight engine compartment.

Tony , no I don't, I saw some pieces across the cowl, but I thought it was just for vibration/squeak, not a water seal. thanks

You can also use the rubber weatherstripping sold at building supply places for doors and windows. It has a adhesive backing and you just peel of the cover and stick it on. Comes in different widths and is pretty cheap.
