howdy....

I bought a rebuilt engine off craigslist a few weeks ago. Guy said it ran and was rebuilt not too long ago. everything is fresh on the engine. has good compression. Tried starting it tonight and it was not starting.. just a few pops here and there. good spark, however when i put my hand over the carb, i felt no vaccum at all when trying to start. so i took it off and this is what i saw...(pic)     any idea what may have caused this? i can see the heat riser flapping when i move it... so i am assuming i need to start looking for a new intake manifold/exhaust??18473700415_1805c770c1_h_d.jpg

That heat riser must of been stuck for a long....long time. :eek: I would be concerned about where all that metal went. You might pull the head for a look-see before looking for a replacement manifold.

as it is the exhaust...I do not think it would have been sucked up into the intake..valves work wonders...

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Judging from the photo the metal got to a molten state. And there must have been one heck of a backfire at some point during that event. I think I would want to be certain about the internal condition of the engine before I went much farther.

Tim;

Well what else would have caused this? It is certainly very odd but about the only other thing that makes a hole like that is a cutting torch :huh: ? And why would somebody do that ? I can imagine that if it was running when this happened.....it didn't run that way for long. No matter where the metal wound up.

Definitely a weird one and a photo that should make the wall of shame. I for one never liked these heat risers. I removed the one on my truck a while back. I had a welder buddy seal  the shaft holes and made a SS plate to go between the manifolds for a bit of extra insulation. It runs fine without the darn thing.

Good call Jeff.

I had a hole develop in the side of my intake manifold (see photo), so I pulled the manifold apart and found that the heat riser flap had been setup in the wrong position.

This is caused by age , heat, corrosion and freezing.

My 265 currently has a small external hole in the intake heat riser area as shown.

I had a chrysler 8 pop the side of the intake from rust and freezing.

Saw a Toyota land cruiser burn a hole through the bottom of the intake also as shown.

thanks everyone for the responses! Been looking at it closer and  it looks like corrosion from water sitting in it forever. the metal is very thin on the bottom....anyway  I will be taking the intake/exhaust off my old 201 to use on this.
