Hi all, have been driving my car a bit these days (47 Chrsysler Coupe), I have in the seats, but no door panels, headliner or carpets on the floor.

It is pretty noisy to say the least, have any of you had your cars on the road like this, when the interior went in, did it cut down on the noise and appear to give a more comfortable smoother ride. I am sure hoping it will make a difference............Fred

Huge change when the hood lining goes in, and again when flooring goes down. One option is to fit some carpet offcuts in as a temporary solution. Also I fitted plastic sheeting behind the door panels (like in a modern car) which helps keep down moisture and dust. Finally radial tires on that were softer than bias and again less rattles. Dave.

Your carpet (when you get it) should have some padding beneath it.....that helps. Then the door panels, etc.......that should all serve to dampen down the noise. As David said, you might start with some carpet remnants as a temporary measure. Try putting a piece in the trunk as well.

I have cheapo indoor/outdoor carpet in my car. Its really inexpensive and does seem to help some. I have 1 piece over the whole floor. The front seat is bolted through it and I cut slots in it for the pegs the rear seat attaches too. Only place it moves is the pass firewall. Haven't gotten that solved yet.

I have most of the interior of my '50 lined with Dynamat, but no headliner, door panels or carpet. It was pretty loud on road trips like this, so I put the original door panels back on, installed the carpet padding, and put in some temporary carpet for our road trip to Tulsa. This made a huge difference in the sound level inside the car. I think when the headliner goes back in, the rear package tray, etc, it will be reasonably comfortable.

I still have some wind noise at the leading edge of the front doors, but I think I'm going to have to live with it since no one makes the stock replacement rubber. My solution works, it's just not completely air tight...

Pete,

That headliner will make a world of difference. I did not go all out installing insulation in my coupe. The only insulation in my door and side panels is the panel itself. The only insulation on the floor or firewall is the carpet insulation. That made things pretty quiet. However, still had noise because of no headliner. About a month or so ago, I installed the cheap insulation from JC Whitney. Cloth mat with aluminum foil on one side of it. About $30 a roll. Used one roll on the roof of my coupe. That helped a lot. However, I now have my headliner half in. When you shut the door now, there is hardly any noise at all from the door shutting. That really made a difference and will probably be even quieter when I finish attaching it. Of course haven't driven it with the headliner hanging down, but I can see just by shutting the doors it's really going to be quiet. AND, it didn't cost an arm and a leg to buy all that high priced insulation.
