BobT-47P15 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Price of about $1350 sounds kinda high for these things......but is it really high? Or is all this a good buy? Edited April 15, 2015 by BobT-47P15 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 The price all depends on quality. If kanter parts? possibly import repro parts. I would not use them at any cost..JMO. Quote
casper50 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 I just got mine rebuilt. All parts to include new cam, new water pump and new oil pump ran $985. And that was delivered up here to Alaska. I shopped around and made sure I got quality parts. Quote
Bingster Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 Are you saying stay away from Kanter's? Quote
casper50 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) I didn't buy from Kanter's at all. I've since rebuilt the carb also. Edited April 15, 2015 by casper50 1 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 Are you saying stay away from Kanter's? I stay away from IMO lower quality import replacement parts. Thats all I'm saying. Quote
Reg Evans Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 Where did you buy your parts casper50? 1 Quote
casper50 Posted April 15, 2015 Report Posted April 15, 2015 a speed shop in Kenai Alaska. He ordered them from wholesale only places. Even with shipping up here he had all but the waterpump here in 3 days. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 16, 2015 Author Report Posted April 16, 2015 Then I found this one...........for $167.88 Seller says: Fresh engine gasket set for all 1942-52 Plymouth and Dodge passenger cars. Every gasket and seal needed for a complete overhaul of the 218/230 CID L-6 is included. Replaces MoPar p/n's 1311056 - 1325975 Item specifics Condition: New Part Brand: TVM Country/Region of Manufacture: United States Other Part Number: 906-044 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 16, 2015 Author Report Posted April 16, 2015 I went back to eBay to look for additional info about that first gasket set, but apparently it is off right now and will probably be relisted before long. Is there a concensus about whether metal or other material makes the best head gasket? Quote
casper50 Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 (edited) you need to know which type of rear oil seal you have. 1 is metal and bolts on and the other is rope. I don't even see one in either of those kits. Edited April 16, 2015 by casper50 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 16, 2015 Author Report Posted April 16, 2015 good thought there Casper. I cannot tell you what I have, but presume it would need to be replaced if doing a rebuild of the engine. Are those items readily available at auto parts stores......or at any other source? Quote
casper50 Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 All the old car stores will have them. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/FEL0/BS6300/02303.oap?year=1947&make=Dodge&model=Custom&vi=1331884&ck=Search_rear+main+seal+set_1331884_-1&keyword=rear+main+seal+set http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Rear-Main-Seal-Set/_/R-FPBBS6300_0436425874 Quote
Andydodge Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 When I was collecting all the bits to build the hotrod 230 engine.........finned edgy head, Offy twin intake etc...I realised that the standard gasket set generally included a copper head gasket which is a no/no with an alloy head, after speaking to a guy here in Oz who plays with Frod flatheads he suggested contacting Best gaskets in the US.........which I did, they had no problem making a steel 230 head gasket to go with their standard mopar gasket set, all new parts, a good price and happy to deal with someone in Oz so I'd recommend contacting them, also their set contained all 2 or 3 of the different types of rear crank seals without me asking..........regards, andyd 1 Quote
Tom Skinner Posted April 16, 2015 Report Posted April 16, 2015 Andy Bernbaum, or Gary Roberts prices are much better than even ebay or the $167 set shown above. Ebay is like $124 (same set as above). Andy or Gary have the same set for $100 $109 range It pays to shop around. Quote
mopardude Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 My thoughts are the first set shows pistons, rings, bearings, etc where as the second kit doesn't. A bit of an apple2orange comparison I also don't believe most of the after market gasket sets come with the rear main seals. A lot of them come with the chain case front seal, though. Quote
Andydodge Posted April 17, 2015 Report Posted April 17, 2015 Mopardude......the Best Gasket brand set did, rope and neoprene type seals......andyd Quote
