John-T-53 Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 (edited) (see attachment) Beware of these guys...don't let 'em fool you, haha! Obviously they couldn't connect the parts in their letter between "1953 vehicle" and "...if you vehicle is a classic, please disregard this letter." I remember several articles in Hemmings about "scrap" programs like these. Many of the vehicles scrapped are often indeed collector cars; too bad they end up in the wrong hands like the legalized mafia of the BAAQMD. Also, I'm a firm believer that driving an old vehicle in good working order (you could call it "recycling") is better for the environment than buying a new one, when you consider all the energy and raw materials (and their respective pollution contributions) that manufacturing requires. I wonder if there's a way to calculate it? BAAQMD Letter.pdf Edited December 23, 2014 by John-T-53 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 So, to meet the requirements of this program your vehicle must be able to pass a smog test, which would indicate that it is not producing pollutants, and yet they want to scrap it. I think they are in cahoots with the auto industry to promote new car sales. 2 Quote
TodFitch Posted December 22, 2014 Report Posted December 22, 2014 The letter says it is entirely voluntary so I guess the program doesn't really bother me. An alternative way of looking at it is that it sets a lower floor the the price of an old vehicle that runs: If I want to sell and you only want to give me $500 I know I have a different buyer that is willing to pay $1000. In either case what the buyer does with the car is up to them: Once I sell it, its future is out of my hands. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted December 23, 2014 Report Posted December 23, 2014 I sold a Ford that way here in Stockton Ca . For my sale , the car had to FAIL the smog test . Quote
Ram Man 02 Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 its a shame they even think about doing something like that to a nice older vehicle Quote
John-T-53 Posted December 30, 2014 Author Report Posted December 30, 2014 In the bigger picture, I also have a problem with "big brother" dropping into your private daily life like this and trying to tell you what to do with your property. Not a good sign, my friends! 2 Quote
