ushp12 Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 I have a '40 Plymouth p10 that needs a new inner speedo cable. I have seen some on various sites, but can't seem to find the correct length. My '40 parts book says it should be 79 5/32 in. long. Another site said 79 1/32 in. long. Any ideas where I can find this item with the correct length? Thanks! And everyone have great Christmas and a happy New Year! Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Can you measure your old one? Quote
ushp12 Posted December 17, 2014 Author Report Posted December 17, 2014 Yes! The length is 78 5/16 in., but it is broken on the one end. The speedo has not worked since I bought the car. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Do you have the broken piece? Quote
48ply1stcar Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Check with an independant auto parts store, they may be able to cut a cable to lenght for you based on the outer cable. If you go a national chain store, some kid will cock his head to side and look at you like you came from outer space. Quote
TodFitch Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 In my area there are still a couple of automotive instrument repair specialists. I'm pretty sure I could take my cable to them and they'd make up a new inner portion to match. . . Don't know about Spokane but I think Tucson is big enough that there would be a shop like that around. jeffsunzeri Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Generic speedo cable inners are readily available at most all automotive parts stores. You will have to cut this cable to length, and the kit provides a new drive-end and a tool to swage it on with one whack from a hammer. The kits are about $10. A good tip is to use your bench grinder to cut the cable to length to prevent fraying from using side cutters. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 wrapping the cable at the point it is to be cut with tape is also a good practice...zizz wheels do excellent here... Quote
