Do any of you guys on the forum know if it is possible to repair a hood lock cable? Mine has broke and I looked on ebay and some other sites for one and man do these people want a small fortune for one. $197.00 for the one that I found. Is it possible to repair one with just another cable wire and does the handle under the dash board come off the old cable? I can't see any screws in the handle at all so I am assuming that the handle doesn't come off. There is a spring like covering at the handle that goes into the handle that I can turn but not pull out. Oh yes for the ones that don't know what kind of cars I have its for a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Coupe (P15).

Any way all suggestions appreciated,

Larry

If you don't care about original any cable will do. I am using a heavy duty generic control cable I got at napa. Has a nice chrome T handle.

If the hood release cable and pullhandle is similar to my throtle cable on my 39 Desoto you might bebale to repair it.  On an older throttle control handle that i found I pulled the handle out on the  unit. The handle has a metal a metal rod inwhich the metal wire is attached. I was able to open the rod and then slide in a new wire and then was able to close the road and pinched the cable into the metal housing and then tjreaded the new wire through the spring like housing.  You can get any old hood cable mechanisim and use the new wire.

If this does not work then install a new handle like Young Ed suggested especially if your car is a driver and not a car being judged.

even if your car is being judged, you can simply leave the stock lever in place and look correct while secretly stashing the new hood cable a little higher and out of sight under the dash..be a good deterrent to folks popping the hood..fix your broken cable which is just long enough to sound the horn should anyone attempt to open the hood with the now defunct hood release..if nothing else..be exciting....especially if you mount the horn just under the dash also..shake things up...venture out...

Like Rich I have also repaired the inner wire in same fashion in the past, exercise in patience..but very doable..

Thanks guys. I will try desoto's suggestion and try that method if it can be done. Now I just have to find the right wire or some wire the same size to do it with. I'll give it a try.

Thanks again for you input,

Larry
