Car carrying weight capacities

Trucks, we know, are rated: 1/2 ton: 1ton, etc. A car with five 200# passengers is carrying 1,000 #'s, i.e., 1/2 ton. Now load the truck and . . . Were/are cars ever given a recommended maximum 'load' weight?oo

Yes typically all cars have a maximum capacity of people plus stuff. However just like trucks you can usually go beyond it without issue. In HS my buddy had a Ford Festiva with a capacity of I believe 475. We used to put 5 guys in there plus all our stuff.

In the specifications section of the owners manual for my nearly 11 year old car it lists the passenger+cargo capacity as 845 pounds.

What about towing capacity? I know the former owner of my S-11 used it to haul a camper all over the place. Seems like it'd be as good as many older trucks from the way it is built.
