My guess- 440 with cross ram-no hemi ?

Mmmmmm......Hemi...Mmmmmmmm.........cross ram.......

Yeah,my grandad was driving a 78 Thunderbird for a few years, and he noticed some engine noise. It was holding good oil pressure and still running good. A few years later he started to pull the engine and rebuild it for a truck, and found that two, yes I said two, of the piston arms were broken! Not trying to cause goosebumps, but I am always a little over zealous in quickly finding and fixing pings and knocks! :-)

ledfootslim I see you are responding to a few postings. But many of us want to know when you will respond to the above "in red" question? What the hell are piston arms

OK guys, I stand corrected-just showing my age I guess. Firstly, I just assumed from the tiny pic of a 57 Chrysler that it was a Hemi, and come on, there can't be that many people that can tell the difference between a hemi and a wedge or 440 under neath a cross-ram from that size of pic....or even know what a cross ram is! BTW, just how do you tell the difference at a glance?

Beg pardon master Don, just my mildly uneducated slang. I call the piston connecting rod bolts "arms" whenever I can't think of there proper term at that exact second :-) Please bear in mind that I have only been working on cars for a year or two, and that makes for a lot to memorise in an automobile! But please call me out on any slip-ups I make! I would rather be corrected than remain ignorant (or silent for that matter!) Thanks!

At the local u pull yesterday I saw a 68 mustang, and a 55 Willys.  No pics, no cameras allowed. Don't have a cell phone.

I'm not sure, but I don't think they put that type of cross-ram on the hemi...or did they? Well, had to be a thrill just to see those cars. I got to look at a nice Airstream under construction in a garage not too far away from home, couple of miles, but I've never seen it on the road or at any of the shows, and have never seen it sitting in the yard of said house with said garage. Probably one of those cars that never see the light of day again.

Oh...! Rod bolts! I see...I usually call those piston elbows. :) No wonder.

I believe the other poster is correct that the never had a cross ram hemi. The other dead give away is the heads/valve covers. The valve covers on a hemi are about twice as wide as the ones under that cross ram in the picture and would have spark plug insulators down the center of it.

Ah, very true Young Ed, I forgot about the spark plug insulators..........kinda dumb considering that last year I helped my granddad rebuild his 57 Desoto Firedome! Ah well.............

A friends brother in law put a 440? with cross ram manifold in a 33 Ply. fender less coupe about 25 years ago. If believe was a stock frame.

Was told it was a blast going straight ahead if you could keep it there, but never accelerate hard in a corner. One wheel would come off the ground about 6"!

Saw him do at corner once as he romped on the gas. Just about did a 360 in front of oncoming traffic!   Sold the car when a baby came into his marriage. Wanted to stay alive! ;)

the 413, base block for the 426  (bore .063) is a very misunderstood engine..it set stock car on it ears with it debut in the shorter wheelbase Dodge of '62...the SS Dodge held the record for HP to weight for many many years for stock production vehicle...  The new Hellcat Dodge is not the next man to beat....one awesome possum..waiting to see if they do a Panther pink edition..saw a pic on line but not a good one that I would paste here

My biggest concern about the 33 Ply. was I never had a chance to ride in it!    :(    Going only straight on a quiet road of course!

I think the Dodge had a couple of spark plugs fouled out.

while I have no intentions of building a SS Dodge it was the intent of the PO to do just that...I bought my 62 Dodge based on its body style, being an original bucket seat car, console and big block B engine...I have already sold some of the 413 stuff I will not be using..picked up a few original trim items etc....these cars looked fast sitting still...very much a misunderstood car by the masses, think of it, the only view most ever got was disappearing taillights in the distance.....lol

the price was right....lol             lot more there than meets the eyes..most was in the towing vehicle..the car has changed some in appearance...some clean up, some metal repairs already made...stripped to bare metal in others and such...little here, little there...I now have my donor drive train for this beast also...it currently has a 440 sitting in the bay...I will be removing that lump for another B-engine...
