55 Fargo Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Same to you Plymy Timmy, now hold on, I be living in a "British Colony" still, no Independence for Me.... Quote
greg g Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Ya know, I just don't get it. Ok, so our fledgling malcontents put pen to paper to illuminate the ideals of humans basic freedoms, and governing concept of power based in the people rather than one person, and to it they added a pretty comprehensive list of grievances illuminating the disappointment of the decisions made by the German Despot ensconced upon the throne of England. After years of war leading to Corwallis's surrender of English forces, Old George did not yet recognize the independence of the Colonies. Two years later in 1781/2 when the treaties of Paris were signed and recognized by Parliament did he cede to the States recognition of their break from mother country. So we celebrate the incitement of revolution, but not its outcome. But non the less it fans our patriotic fervor, provides and excuse for picnics, fireworks and companionship, and is a fun day, But which date has the actual greater meaning???? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 We tend to recognize 7-4-1776 as the birth of our nation since that is the date of the statement of our independence from England. This was demonstrated by President Lincoln on !2-19-1863 by beginning his speech with "Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation........." Since then it has been commonly recognized as "The beginning of the United States of America". May it ever be so. 1 Quote
