dlrides
I want to add some type of vintage looking luggage/roof rack on my Suburban, preferably one that clamps on the drip rail. The repro VW bus racks have the right curvature, but are too narrow. I also plan on some fender skirts. ) Anyone have any knowledge or experience as to type of rack to look for ? ) Are the rear fender openings on the Suburban the same as sedans/coupes ? Thanks in advance

dlrides
What kind of rack is it ?
pflaming
I may be looking for one as well. I'm going to go to a larger salvage yard and see what if find. I see a lot of them on Plymouth Google images and they are all kinds of styles, so I'm thinking Mopar possibly never made one specific for the vehicle. Reg Evans
Sorry, there are no markings on it. Love your car ! Did you restore it ?

I'd rather drive them instead of polish them.
dlrides
Anyone know if the rear fender openings are the same as the coupe/sedan ?
DJ194950
I only have a parts book for 1950- not 1949, but in 1950 the rear fenders of a 2 dr..sedan,suburban and 3 window(bus.) cpe where the same. Suspect same for 49 but there was some changes in the taillight openings 49. But I think a rear fender opening would most likely be the same. Perhaps someone with a 49 Ply. parts book can confirm same? Hard to do as the 49 sedans had taillight in the top of fender and most early Suburbans had taillight in the body. Pictures may tell the story! Best, DJ
dlrides
Found the answer to the fender opening question. Found a company called Agape Auto Parts, they make skirts and visors from 20 ga steel like the originals. They confirmed the suburban opening is the same as other '49's. I ordered skirts and visor. http://agapeautoparts.com Edited July 3, 2014 by dlrides
58prostreet
I have Agape made skirts on my Wayfarer. They are nice skirts, but I had to put pieces if rubber fuel line on the fastner part that squeezes the fender to get it tight enough. I also put self tapping sheet metal screws through bottom of skirt and fender edge. You can't see the screws. Bob

Excellent fit on both, built really well and all the rolls and bends were spot on. The side mounting brackets on the visor are a little crude compared to a Fulton, but considering the cost, they're acceptable. BTW - My paint guy uses a "paint analyzer" (probably not the right name for it) machine for matching colors, and the '49 Plymouth Rio Maroon was an identical match for a modern Toyota color ! http://dlrides.smugmug.com/Cars/49-Murrys-Milll-Photos/44703653_MZMTvN#!i=3580675601&k=Pn7Sm4F Edited October 13, 2014 by dlrides

BobT-47P15
Looks great. I'm not sure if the 50 wagon had a roof rack available. Racks were more often found on the Chrysler Town and Country sedans and on limos of the late 40s and early 50s. Otherwise, you might be able to use a rack from some later 50s or a 60s wagon. plyroadking
Is there a possibility of getting a picture of their mounting brackets for the visor? I've been considering one myself
Plymouthy Adams
as for wagon racks there are several options..I will not list them by make and model as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, if you wish for new...JC Whitney list these 'vintage look' racks new for a fair price and when I last looked was by size per your request......the junkyards have a variety of wagon of later vintage to chose from..some will fit right but a bit of a trip to affix, some will require a bit of tube trimming to fit the narrow roof..some are direct bolt on an of a foreign persuasion..some require not only the rack be mounted on four corners...but will require the transfer of the actual roof metal stiffener anti-scuff rails be mounted also along with the protective strips between the rail and the paint...I have one here for my Suburban that looks great in mock up here in the shop but I have not mounted it yet and will make that call moments to installing the headliner...I want another minds eye view of it outside in daylight.. dlrides
Is there a possibility of getting a picture of their mounting brackets for the visor? I've been considering one myself Like I said earlier, the mounts are a little crude looking compared to a Fulton, but they do the job and allow plenty of adjustability. If I were keeping the car, I would fabricate a SS cover for the mounts.
