Greenbomb Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 I'm going to install the engine in my '50 coupe. The front fenders, grille and core support are all on the car. Can I install the engine with the transmission attached? It has an OD, if that makes any difference. Quote
builtfercomfort Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 The front clip comes off as a whole with 12-14 bolts. Most people remove the front sheet metal for access. I vaguely remember an old thread where it's possible to leave the clip on but the front end has to be jacked up quite high to stop the transmission from hitting the ground during install. Quote
P15-D24 Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 If your going to leave the front clip on then pull the transmission. Life will way easier. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 Front clip on, transmission removed, 25" Desoto engine (that is two inches longer than the original engine) slipped in fairly easy with no helper. Were the transmission attached I would still be working on it Others have done it with the transmission removed and the hood still on the car but I would not recommend it. Quote
_shel_ny Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 If it is possible, a load leveler will be a must. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 I have seen engines go into these old cars at almost vertical with the tranny attached and all metal on the front of the car...I do not recommend doing this by yourself or even with a couple able bodied helpers.. Quote
Greenbomb Posted April 19, 2014 Author Report Posted April 19, 2014 Thanks for all the info- about what was expected. But, I was hopin'.....!!! Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 I have seen them go in vertical with no tranny attached and two expert helpers using a modified hoist with leg extenders. Quote
Greenbomb Posted April 20, 2014 Author Report Posted April 20, 2014 Looks like it will be the engine from above and the trans from below. This will be a good time for the grandson to get some OJT. Quote
ptwothree Posted April 20, 2014 Report Posted April 20, 2014 The clearance between the trans tunnel and cross member is just too tight for a engine/trans install...even with the front clip removed. I have a '51 that needed some grinding on the bottom of the trans and cross member to finally fit. Next time, I'll modify the cross member so it's a bolt in. Good luck! Quote
