Ward Duffield Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Hello New to me P-15 w/ rebuilt 3-spd 90 wt dripping from clutch pan when sitting parked Not overfilled Causes? Cures? Thanks Ward D Quote
P15-D24 Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Welch plug on front of tranny case properly set? Gasket in place between bell housing and tranny? Quote
greg g Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 supposed to be a gasket between trans and bell housing. ends of the trans slider rods are open, gasket seal them. Quote
suntennis Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 One place for leaks is the front face of the transmission just behind the bell housing where the cluster gear shaft mounts in the case. The area for this shaft is just below where the transmission fits to the bell housing. Quote
Ward Duffield Posted February 3, 2014 Author Report Posted February 3, 2014 OK fantastic Now I can look real close and ck for that gasket Thanks so much Ward D Quote
_shel_ny Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Note the original gasket on mine was a split gasket. That would allow a gasket to be installed without pulling the transmission all the way out. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 3, 2014 Report Posted February 3, 2014 Was a shielded front input shaft bearing was installed? Quote
Ward Duffield Posted February 4, 2014 Author Report Posted February 4, 2014 No idea, but much of the work by the DPO will be redone, I expect. Thanks to you all for your insights Ward D Quote
Solution bosworth Posted February 4, 2014 Solution Report Posted February 4, 2014 Ward I found my transmission leaking from the front following my rebuild. I found that I hadn't set the plug that seals the end of the cluster gear shaft well enough. That plug is below the bell housing and is not sealed by the gasket. With the transmission still in the car, I drained the fluid, cleaned the plug and recess thoroughly, and applied sealer. No more leak! Best of luck Bill Quote
Ward Duffield Posted February 9, 2014 Author Report Posted February 9, 2014 You guys nailed it; no gasket installed by DPO.Anyone have a thickness measurement for the original paper used?I went to make a gasket today and my paper is all too old, so I'd like to get the right weight paper tomorrow. Also I guess I'll put sealer on the welch plug. Thanks again for the help!!! Ward NY Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 There is not supposed to be a plug over the end of the cluster gear shaft. The shaft is a interference tight fit at the front of the case and should not leak unless the case bore has been enlarged by improper assembly-shaft installed from the front to rear. The forward end of the cluster shaft is about .003-005" bigger than the other rear end. Bob Quote
1941Rick Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I ended up putting a plug on that shaft.....you are it should not be loose but after 70 years things happen....no more leaks Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I have seen a few leaking my self. Anything you can do to stop that kind of leak is a good thing! Quote
_shel_ny Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) The gasket material that I used was approx. .030. Could probably go a bit thicker without problems. Avoid the "make a gasket with a paper grocery sack" advice. Edit: this thread may help with a download of the gasket http://p15-d24.com/topic/23629-transmission-to-bell-housing-gasket/?hl=%2Btransmission+%2Bgasket Edited February 9, 2014 by shel_ny Quote
