As long as everyone has their own seat belts  you're good to go in Ca.

In California, if seat belts were not required when the vehicle was made the car does not need them today. EXCEPT if you carry young children. Then you have to have the child seats or belts. I'm OK with that law.

Makes me wonder how and why so many of us boomers survived? I vividly recall the child restraint (also known as my mothers right arm) being in front of my face on every fast stop she had to make when I was a youngster. Got to love government intervention.

These days a youngster must be in the back seat facing rearward secured in a cocoon.

Here abouts, they won't let you leave the hospital with a newborn if you don't have an approved car seat and the hospital staff secure the child in the seat to make sure.

Thats' nuthing.... I clearly remember laying on the parcel shelf in Dad's 56 Chevy looking at the lights and stars as we drove across LA at night.

Ya think they were trying to get rid of me?

I think it is too bad the kids today will never have such memories.

Darlene and I had a 63 Chevy II station wagon. The back seat was usually down and the entire rear area was full of toys. Two toddlers, they loved to ride to town. Today they would toss me in jail for the same thing.

My dad drove the long trips to the grandparents at night - less traffic, no farmers' rigs, no heavy traffic in towns, no flashing sun and shadow from trees beside the roads, and best of all, the kids were asleep, for the most part.

The third seat of the DeSoto Suburban was folded down, and several of the seven kids were bunked out on the cargo floor.  The bigger kids sat on the middle seat if they weren't tired, and took turns with the privilege of sitting between my mom and dad in the front seat.   In retrospect, my older brother remembers the wet bedding and the smell from one of my older sister's carsickness.

One night, my dad got pulled over for speeding with a trailer, and passing on a hill.  The policeman got one whiff of the interior, and let my dad go with a warning.  My dad was suffering enough.
