J.R. Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Can I swap out the square solenoid on top of the starter in my 50 Chrysler for the round solenoid or will they not interchange? It is kinda ridiculous that there isn't really any reasonably priced starter options for our cars and by reasonable I mean something under $100. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Post pictures of both so I understand your question. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 Good pictures but I cant help. Hopefully someone else can. Quote
moose Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 I'm interested in this also, I'd like to have a backup. I would care to wager that Dodgeb4ya can answer something here. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 9, 2013 Report Posted July 9, 2013 I have had to replace solenoids on the square box type quite a few times. I have never tried to swap the round to square type solenoids. The round type are used on 1942 through 1953 DeSotos where the round type are used on some later 1950 through 1954 chryslers. There are more than one type of round 237/251 solenoids too. So now that I have confused ya all thats about what I can offer! I did look in my parts books and the 1950 MoPar parts book says that the chrysler yoke and housings and other parts are the same as the DeSoto, but the 1953 and prior book says different? Someone will have to give it a try to teach us something on this solenoid issue. Bob Quote
J.R. Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 So for now I am just going to roll with what I have and swap over to a 12v starter or see if a round solenoid will fit later. Right now I have the whole car rewired with a new EZ wire kit with the exception of the ignition system under the hood, everything else is good to go. Originally my car was swapped over to 6v Neg ground when I got it with most of the wires burnt up, crispy and falling apart so not much got labeled when we ripped it out. Everything I have seen shows everyone swapping over to a 56 starter with a ford style solenoid with no one using this wonderful square solenoid that I have found zero wiring diagrams for. So having these wires left to hook up... - Ignition switch start - Solenoid Power - Coil Positive How would you do it with this square solenoid involved, wire in a starter relay (60's-70's mopar style or...?) my car didn't have a starter relay when I got it, just a horn relay. My coil is now a modern 12v with no resistor required, stock style points with a 12v condenser. I have rewired plenty of cars with no issues but for some reason this one is getting at me, probably because I have about 3 garage projects along with a bathroom remodel and a full time job all going at the same time. I just want this damn thing running again! Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 When you own a flathead chrysler patience is a good thing to have at times. The starters can be a real problem to find parts for. I hope the pics I posted on AACA were of some help. Bob Quote
J.R. Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 Ha, you're telling me. I can't wait to adjust the valves on this one..... The pics are great for reference and have been added to one of the many "car junk" folders on my computer. I just keep thinking that there has to be a modernish starter that will fit the 251 kinda like how the Dakota mini starter fits on everything from a slant six to a hemi. Quote
J.R. Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 What are the 2 wires going to the left and right top 2 small terminals? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Top left goes to "ARM" terminal of generator or regulator . This factory way or wiring prevents the starter from being energized when the generator is charging @ 6 volts-engine running. When the GEN is not charging there is a ground path through the armature brushes so the starter solenoid will operate. You also could just ground this stud but the starter could be operated at any time you want-right into the spinning flywheel. The top right stud is the 6V energizer terminal that goes to the ignition switch-"ST" terminal. Bob 1 Quote
J.R. Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 Thanks for the help. I'm going to try and get this thing up and running tomorrow before my buddy brings over his 68 Caddy for some work. Crap, I just noticed you're in Woodenville! That's not too far, I'm by Lake Kathleen in the Renton Highlands. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 I did a couple of jobs at the Federal Reserve Bank in Renton a few years back. Quote

Don Coatney Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 I wanted this... But all I got was this. Quote
J.R. Posted July 14, 2013 Author Report Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Well I threw in a new and charged up 12v battery and she fired right up.....as soon as I jumped the coil to the battery.....I will get a new ignition switch tomorrow. Edited July 14, 2013 by J.R. Quote
greg g Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 I know it is across the country from where you are, but three years ago I had the occasion to visit this fellow and he had a bunch of NOS and Rebuilt old stock starters and generators, solenoids and regulators for cars from the 40's through the 70's on his shelves. He also rebuilds items brought into him from a stock of older parts. You might want to give him a call, about the possibility of a new piece or a rebuild of your item.
