doctor dirt Posted May 12, 2013 Author Report Posted May 12, 2013 Go away Don, I don't need your help, condesending people like you need to take a break. So GO! avoid my threads and my posts, ok? Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 12, 2013 Author Report Posted May 12, 2013 Couldn't find any of the above suggestions and the car needs to be moved. My tow guy is not avalible and spending for a tow company is just to much. I found the original Ford 90g which is cross referenced to ISO 22 or 32! I can't verify this but its off the cross reference so thats what going in the tranny. The couplar is getting Amsoils 10W40 motorcycle, again this was suggested on the cross reference and also suggested in my thread! Its avalible in 30 mins and thats that!! I'm sorry if my inexperiebnce rubbs some the wrong way, the shop manual showed up on Thurs nite and I haven't had time to go over it, sorry! I won't be spoken to rudely and I won't be written about in any condesending way! If questions are repeated through the years and its upsetting then take a vacation or close the forum to outside people who are simply looking for some suggestions and guidance! Thats that, have a nice Sunday I'm going to try and get my car running out properly! Doc Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 12, 2013 Report Posted May 12, 2013 First off I am not out to make you look bad here but I would like you to go back and read your thread again and look at all the time and trouble people have spent in a means to help you. Further, I find it very odd that out of all the membership that only one person is running into a stone wall at every turn and cannot find any suitable lube products for their car. As you mentioned also in this thread that you have physical limitations that prevent you from working on this car..while that is sad that is no excuse for not listening to the advice given here as in your very post the mechanic you have chosen is not up to speed on this make and model. IT is important that the information you get her is given to him to heed. I invited you to chat last night and spent a good amount of time explaining what you had and the lubes products you need and asked you to write the information down. Yet, 10 minutes later you come back on chat wanting to put the coupler fluid in the transmission. Either you do not understand that the coupler, tranny and rear gear are three separate entities that require three different lube oil or you are listening to the bad advice of a snake oil salesman form Amsoil. Coming here for help is great..but it also helps to listen to the very folks that own drive and maintain these cars and have been doing so for many years. They are not out to steer you wrong, quite the opposite...they are only trying to steer you in the right direction so the car will not suffer adverse effects from improper products and you end up with a car that is non functional. The Amsoil folks for the most part only know what is on the blurb sheet they are selling and have no clue what a GL rating is and what additives make them distinct from the other. They are out to make a dollar on the side and that is about it. The internet has many other forums that are dedicated to these old cars also and the POC and AACA are but two that come to mind and while I am not in any manner trying to run you off...but only offering other avenues for you to bounce your question off of their membership. As they are both nationwide also, it is very plausible that you could locate a member near you that can walk you though some of these special points of interest these old cars have and help bring you mechanic of choice up to speed on the older cars. Getting upset with members here and showing such will not get you much help in the long run I am afraid. Good luck on the car. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 12, 2013 Author Report Posted May 12, 2013 Thanks Plymouthy but as I said just because someone is "green" and imnexperienced doesn't give anyone (Don) the right to belittle. Thats said and thats Done! On to the car I found the original reference to ISO 22/32 /pure minerial 90 FORD and that went into the tranny approximently 2 3/4 to 3 pints!! I used the amsoil 10W30 motorcycle oil for the cuplar and it took 5 qts. The correct cuplar fluid will be found and bought however I do think the 10W will do no harm. The car ran out excellant and is quieter than before! We'll be doing king pins next sat then remove the steering grearbox at my home the following sat and send it out to LLC in Chi.or red head in Wash. st. I will read up on the clutch configuration and find why its grinding out when the pedal is 70% engaged and more! If the pedal is 50% its fine and I can change gears easily with no noise! I have the book and this week hopefully they'll be NO triming bone in my mouth and removing 7 teeth that were damaged 3 yrs ago in my accident. I spent 3 weeks in a coma and 5 1/2 months in the hospital and 1 year in a wheel chair and after all this no one is getting rude to me. Good day and I do appreciate the helpfull suggestions and directions from the people who don't blow smoke up their butts! As I state in all my posts. Inflated egos need to be checked when talking to me. I'm respectfull and considerate, I expect the same!! Later have a great Sunday Nite Ride! Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 20, 2013 Author Report Posted May 20, 2013 I've had a few surgeries in the past 8 days that has set me back abit but I'm doing ok now! My son came down from Conn. and he and my mechanic did the king pin work and will be taking the steering box out in a day or two. The company I'm considering to do the job is LLC also known as Mid West Reman, has anyone dealt with them? They seem to be well experienced and I spoke with one of the owners who spoke very genuinely. I purchased a felpro 773 gasket for the AC 588 fuel pump but it looks to small (2") to cover the glass bowl. Is it possible the inner opening of the bowl is the size of this gasket and the bolt pattern of the glass bowl isn't covered by this gasket? The only numbers coming up are 773 and 5019 for the pump! They seem to be the same size gasket! Also is the "heat sheild" mentioned on another thread something off a truck or a piece manufactored by a member here (on the site) if so are they avalible? Excited about getting the gear box done then finish the allignment and continue fixing leaks. Theres still some lube on the garage floor the cuplar was filled (app. 6 quarts) and the tranny also (app. 2 3/4-3pints) so its possible that theres leaks there? Hope not!! I'll have access to the lift when the box comes back so a better search can be conducted. Hoping to run the car to the east coast by June 8th, its a round trip that includes about 330 miles to it!!!! No major highway roads the old rt.27 that crosses Florida is the main run. thanx again for any info on the "gasket size" & "heat sheild"!! Doc. Quote
_shel_ny Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 (edited) 773 vs 5019 different size per NAPA website i i Heat shield part #1142990 . Cars, maybe trucks as well. Not readily available. Edited May 26, 2013 by shel_bizzy_48 Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 21, 2013 Author Report Posted May 21, 2013 Thanks just got off the phone with felpro and their basicly the same gasket! When the steering box is out being remaned I'll pop off the pump and see what the inside looks like. OK the shield I'll try to hunt down, thanks for the #'s!! Doc. Quote
james curl Posted May 22, 2013 Report Posted May 22, 2013 The flat heat shield is installed between the pump and manifold. It is held in place with a bolt on the manifold and tall bolt to the fuel pump. It is common this part was not reinstalled when the fuel pump was replaced. If it is missing reproductions are available from Paul Taylor Industries, PO Box 618, Arroyo Grande, CA 93421 for reasonable cost. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 22, 2013 Author Report Posted May 22, 2013 Thanks James, I've been searching but couldn't find one, thanks! I'm going to order a rebuild kit for the fuel pump, I found an internal diagram showing that the diaphrame is extended to the edge not the gasket so my guess is all the internals are failing. I hope to have the steering box in the mail on Monday and hopefully see it within 8 business days! Thanks Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 23, 2013 Author Report Posted May 23, 2013 If anyone has a heads up on where I can get the correct grommets and retainer for my car's wipers please let me know! I thought I purchased them from Collectors but after talking with them for the 5th time in 6 weeks I'm tired of their excuses! Yesterday I got 1 grommet in the mail, yes ONE!! hahaha! Today I got a wiper fluid tank that was suppposed to go to Maine!!! Seems that this company needs an overhaul at their shipping dock!IIIII I'll take the one I got and try to match it at the hardware store, thanx Doc. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 Collectors Auto Supply isn't that a lot of times! Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 23, 2013 Author Report Posted May 23, 2013 Yeah I'm very disappointed, my order was taken with the boss on vacation and things got screwed up but they've been story telling me for over a month now! Now some poor guy in Maine is missing his wiper washer tank, gonna get his phone number and let him now I have it!!..........I'll trade for wiper grommets hahahaha!! Yesterday they said they'd get back in 5 to 15 minutes and never called, not good! I'm learning who to buy from and who to send out to also! I heard they were slow and thats ok but you can't take peoples money and not produce. The owner said he'd get them to me in 10 days, hope it don't rain!!! Then he has the nerve to ask me to pay for the tank shipping to Maine and he'll credit 15.00 to my card???? Great businessman, ups and uspostal is nowhere near me!! I'll take care of the MoPar Maine guy! Doc Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 25, 2013 Author Report Posted May 25, 2013 Happy Hoildays to our Veterans!!!!! Sunday I will be removing the gear box and sending it to LLC outside Chicago to be remaned! Does anyone know if a modern stabilizer (front sway bar) is avalible for my car? I don't want to "pinch" the coils but I'd like the cornering to get slightly tighter! I'm not trying to reinvent the ride just want it abit tighter! After reading up the cuplar/clutch/tranny info I'm pretty sure the Clutch needs an overhaul! Theres a distinctive noise as the car is idoling and if I engage the clutch "a inch" the sound is gone!! My guess is a throw out bearing and an adjustment but I'll have to wait for my gear box return to start that investigation. There is a transmission shop in town that has worked on my Cadillacs and AMC/AMX and is a very fair guy with 45 years experience. Hopefully he has some experience and is willing to check out the manual! Once the car has warmed up if I depress the clutch to the floor there a racket of grinding noise, once I release from the floor an inch or two it disappears!!! Ghosts???? hahahaha!!!! Oh well once the gearbox comes back the clutch I think is the last "big" problem to fix. We will peak in the tranny to see if its still full, if so then the lube is coming out of the cuplar! The gear box is leaking but that leak is very minimal. Also is there a specific fuel pump rebuild kit thats has better material than others?? I replaced the gasket attached to the block a few weeks ago but now the bowl is wet and my best guess is that it hasn't attended to in some time. I saw a rebuild kit for 40.00+shipping that stated it has a more modern material for the gas we're stuck with these days!! thanx again and to the Veterans have a great day and a flag on the MoPar is always a good choice! Doc. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 25, 2013 Report Posted May 25, 2013 Where is the oil leak? Up in the bell housing area or back on the transmission? For your fuel pump, contact the good folks at Antique Auto Parts Cellar http://www.maritimedragracing.com/then_and_now_automotive.htm with the make and model of your fuel pump. They have good quality rebuild kits. If you don't know your pump make and model, send them a picture of it. They'll be able to identify it and let you know what kit you'll need. Merle Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 25, 2013 Author Report Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) Thanks Merle on the rebuild kit! The leaks were EVERYWHERE when I first got the car, the fuel pump, the oil filter housing, oil pan, steering gearbox everything except the rear end that has fluid in it was leaking!!! I will check the capacity in the tranny(2 3/4 pints) tomorrow it was filled last week along with the cuplar (7 1/2 qts)! If the tranny tank is down then I guess theres a leak on the tranny. If not the cuplar is leaking somewheres! Going to rebuild the fuel pump while the gearbox is being redone along with some cosmetic polishing thats needed in the interior that I've put off for sometime! thanx again Merle I'll order that on Monday or on Tuesday!! cheers, Doc. doctor dirt Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Trouble freeing up the gearbox!! Unbolted the three bolts to the frame and moved the pitman arm away, got the box to slide about an inch but can't free it! I'm not at the garage but my son and friend are telling me whats going on. They did tap the box but are afraid to force it anymore so I told them to wait until I get some info. ................so can anyone explain what their doing wrong? They did loosen something on the top of the box also and theres no explaination on how to remove the box properly in the shop manual! Any help will be appreciate I have lift time till about 10am tomorrow. thanx Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Just back checked the "logs" here! Seems the column comes out with the box then the box gets "cracked" to release the column??? Can this be done without pulling the steering wheel? Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 27, 2013 Author Report Posted May 27, 2013 Getting to it eventually! The column comes out with the box intact, got it!!! Will do it this week, lost my time on the lift for now. How do you seperate the column from the box? Is their a collar or a cotter pin set up? I don't want to cause any damage and my manual doesn't have info on how the column seperates from the box, thanx again!!!! happy holiday and always a thanx to ALL veterans! Doc Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 29, 2013 Author Report Posted May 29, 2013 "It doesn't seperate" it ALL goes to the reman shop!!!!!! OK thats the story on that, I need suggestions on where to shop for a Clutch Assembly. pressure plate, fly wheel, disc, gasket kit etc etc the Clutch throw out bearing is the culprit but the rest needs to be done also. The mechanic sat with me while the car was on his lift and explained where the wear was and where the leaks are. Going over the Clutch & Fluid Drive view in the manual he wants me to purchase everything from no.3 through no. 11 on the diagram! I do know of Andy B. and that their listed on the sites ref. retailers just wondering if anyone has any personal prefrences! Still a little bit of motor oil coming from the side valve gaskets and looks like my rear main seal is still leaking (light) but needs to be done also. Is the rear main seal a "rope seal" ????? more work needs to be done to get this car right, thanx Doc. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 Your clutch can be rebuilt. There have been good results posted here from Tennessee Clutch (Don C has their info). Or any good clutch shop in your area should be able to do it. The Fluid Drive / clutch drive plate can also be surfaced, but it'll have to come off of the FD unit. There was a recent thread regarding this and the general concensus was that if it looks good you can probably just clean it up and reinstall your clutch. Throwout bearings can be had from many sources including Bernbaum and Roberts. Napa, Bumper to Bumper, Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Reilly, etc may even be able to get one. Quote
doctor dirt Posted May 29, 2013 Author Report Posted May 29, 2013 Yes Merle thats what we're doing, thanx. The clutch plate isn't in good shape someone adjusted this set up to get the last bit of life from it! As I said when I first posted about this car someone did the cosmetics but neglected the important stuff!!!! They "gooped" over the valve covers gaskets and the springs for the pedals are in terrible shape too! About 5 qts of red/brown fluid came out of the cuplar so it was filled with who knows what. I have a veteran tranny guy who is familar with fluid drive and after going for a ride and putting it up on his lift he doesn't think its as bad as I thought. The engine and tranny are very quiet and smooth. I'll give him the info on Andy B's and he could put together a list. The rear main seal is the question right now, does that year/model/maker use a rope seal or the urathane!!! Obviously we'll know when its out but I want to have all parts on hand. I can't tie up peoples lifts, any info on what was used??? Doc. Quote
doctor dirt Posted June 10, 2013 Author Report Posted June 10, 2013 The car will be heading for the new Cuplar build and complete Clutch Assembly on Thursday. I got lucky and found a restorer who specializes in Packards and is very familar with Fluid Drive set ups. The gear box will be removed on Sunday and sent to LLC on Monday so hopefully the car will be "healthy" by the middle of next month. The rear main is leaking along with the valve "windows" so that will be addressed too! Thanks to many of you for your info and suggestions, Plymouthy especially!!! More than likely won't be around much I was told on two other forums that this was place for info on my car but that with it came some arogant responces and a bit of snobbering!!! They were right, sorry but at my age I don't sit back when someone gets rude to me especially if I'm asking for help on a forum set up to primarily help novice folks out!!! Water over the dam now but when the lines are drawn I know how to read!! Thanks again and maybe I'll post a pic when the mirrors and beauty rings and Hankook WW and other cosmetic Stuff I bought many weeks ago are on the car once the mechanics are right!!! thanx to the helpfull folks here!! Doc. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 There are those who come here to get their car questions info only and then disappear never to be heard from again-the me,me and my car thing. It's a good thing to come here and offer help interact and offer advice/compliments to others on this board too. It's what makes this a great forum. Some people can be a bit crusty-so what. Gotta stand up, and take it to be a real P15-D24 man! Oh and a PH man Bob 2 Quote
pflaming Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 I was told on two other forums that this was place for info on my car but that with it came some arogant responces and a bit of snobbering!!! Doc, I couldn't disagree more to the above. DodgeB4ya said it much better than I could. The so-called arrogant ones have become my biggest allies and now net friends. I hope to meet them someday. None could be more novice than I was/am. I was/am a seeker so I looked for the advice and overlooked how it was said. The wrapping is no indicator of the contents. One year I insisted that the Christmas presents be wrapped with the colored cartoon pages of the newspaper, our children still remember that Christmas. I should have insisted that it become a tradition. I encourage you to stick around, you have something to offer to the conversation. Quote
doctor dirt Posted June 11, 2013 Author Report Posted June 11, 2013 I appreciate your view and I assure you the comments in question aren't "chasing me away" at all! Its just that at my age now I have no time for "trying out" to be a worthy member here! Theres always questions and answers to share and I'm all for that but I don't need to be admonished for not memorizing the manual in 3 days time hahahaha!!!! I'm a pretty easy going guy but I have no patience for people who who demean a fellow for "buying" or "paying" for work done on a car as opposed to being able to do it by yourself!!!! Really??? Bite me!!! Again done & over!!! I put the trim rings on this morning and they are some fancy stuff!!!! Looks pretty good!!! Have a great day, everyone!!! Doc. Quote
