ggdad1951 Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 Got the order from Tim - Bring Chili, condiments and salad. Also I'm bringing a whole batch of Pilot-house T-shirts. Oh yea, and my camera. Gonna need a camera to capture this event. See ya all tomorrow. Above you see a picture posted in the BBQ thread. I know there has been discussion in the past about the color of the red in the horns, and I've never heard a definitive answer for that, so I plan on a nice red that matches what I've seen on old ornamets I've run across in the past. BUT my questionis the eyes...are they to be painted, or is this a cool, but non original, embellishemnt? Quote
TrOjAnUK Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 I have a spare ornament? which I was tempted to have re chromed and put very small red led`s in the eyes,,, not sure if that might be a bit "too" much though.. but yea, I like the red eyes TrOjAn Quote
Bob_Koch Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 I searched Don Bunn's book(s) regarding the paint in the Rams nosepiece. I find references to Dodge using red between the letters in the D O D G E on the front nameplate, red on the hub caps and red on the lines in the center piece in 51 - 53 trucks. But no reference to the factory painting the Ram. Anyone have info on this??? Quote
4852dodge Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 On of my part trucks had red in the area in the horns. It looked to be factory and the same shade as the remains in the dodge emblem. Quote

Anyone have info on this??? if you look closely at the photos in bunn's book, most of the trucks having the ram hood ornament appear to have paint in the gap created by the horns. i can't say what color, because it is black & white, but it is clearly painted from the factory. there are a few pictures where it is difficult to say whether there is paint, but i'd estimate that at least 75% have paint. wally Quote
wallytoo Posted April 9, 2013 Report Posted April 9, 2013 for gg, not sure about the eyes. cannot tell from the photos. if i were to guess, i'd say the eyes were NOT painted from the factory. wally Quote
JBNeal Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 I have since lost the jpg, but there was a NOS mint-in-the-box hood ornament on eBay several years ago that showed red paint not only in the ram's horns, but also red in the recessed area around the eyes (not the eyes themselves) and in the recessed area around the nostrils. I have one ram that doesn't have the red paint, but in the areas I've described there is a dark discoloration. But from 10 feet away, who's gonna notice? Quote
Scruffy49 Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 Mine had oxidized red in the horns, eyes and nostrils. Perfect match to a friend's NOS parts is Testors 1103 model enamel. One Shot has a nearly identical shade, can not remember the part number. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) Here is a pic of a really nice original ornament -paint only in the ribbed area. Bob Edited April 11, 2013 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
Scruffy49 Posted April 11, 2013 Report Posted April 11, 2013 You know the old "Dodge-Different" advertising slogan really ought to have been "Dodge- No two are even remotely similar to each other, even if they came off the line one right after the other"... Quote
Solution townwagon Posted April 11, 2013 Solution Report Posted April 11, 2013 The answer is in the horns only from what I have seen. Here is a picture of an NOS one I have here in the box. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 15, 2013 Author Report Posted April 15, 2013 I'd agree. They eye painted, while cool, doesn't make sense as it is "proud" on the casting and woudl be prone to damamge quickly. Everything on these trucks that had paint on a surface like this had it in a recessed area. Quote
