2 degrees after is still adanced..

retarded spark is firing before the established timing mark

advanced is when you are firing after the established mark..

example if your established timing is 4 degrees before TDC and you have it firing at 2 degrees before TDC you have advanced your spark 2 degrees..and if it is firing at 6 before TDC your spark in then retarded 2 degrees..

I've always thought advanced meant firing sooner and retarded as firing later.

Then,to my case I have to put 2º AFTER(retarded)?

No, you use the degree setting recommended by the factory as a starting point, and then can go either way to find the engine's "happy" setting where it runs the best. That setting could be several degrees either side of the factory recommended degree setting or the factory setting. Depends on what your engine likes.

Geeze guys.. one of the reasons I got my truck is that you can leave the distributor tight enough to run and still turn by hand to get your timing dialed in until months later you run into someone with a timing light.

Lots of smart info in this thread though,

Hank :D

Dave72dt and Tim Adams,I asked why before or after, because my established timing mark WWII GMC is 5º BUDC(before upper dead center),it has too a pointer in clutch housing and a steel ball in the flywheel.

Nice job Karl.

"I will do a compression leak down test to be sure its closing correctly and of course adjust the valve clearances when I get her running. Might have to invest in a better camera or better eyes I used to be able to take good pictures...lol ":D

My camera is a SONY Cyber shot 14.1 MP.
