FINALLY got to spend a day on the truck

Recommended Posts

wow!!! I finally said "the heck with it" and took the day off the farm and spent the day working on the truck. I forgot how good it feels to be out in the garage. I decided to take off the headers and put on stock exhaust manifolds on the 318 as I was having clearance problems with the Dakota steering connections and column placement. (I now have a nice set of unused Stainless steel headers available cheap). After putting on the left stock manifold, I was able to use the stock location for the lower column mount again (remember, it has a Dakota floor and firewall in it too). As far as the right side is concerned, I have a question for the group. Does Mopar make a rear dump stock exhaust manifold for the right side? I got the left one a few years ago supposedly off a Dart?? and it is rear dump. I would just like them to match if possible. As soon as I get the exhaust refabricated and figure out where the water temp outlet is on this 318 (there is an open threaded hole on the rear of the intake to the right of the carb, is that it?), I can actually get this thing running.

I think the threaded plug on the intake near the carb is for vacuum..the plug for the temp gauge sender will be near the thermostat housing and is also a threaded and often plugged hole if you do not have a thermostat control vacuum switch...a picture would be great..as I am not sure what manifold you actually have..as for exhaust manifold matching..one center and one rear is matching..not sure but you may want to look at some of the most recent manifolds for that style and I am not sure of the fit..but I think Iread where they yet interchange..don't hold me to that..been long time since I read that and have no clue where it was written..

Tim, I have an Edelbrock Performer manifold, I am posting a pic for you. I would assume I will need to plug the rear vacuum hole and open the front large plug for the temp sensor? I appreciate your help. You seem to always have answers for my knotty questions. :D

I see the plug just rear of the heater hose and thermostat housing and you will either plug the rear vacuum or install a tree for you various taps should you run PCV, booster, vacuum reservoir etc etc..IF you plan on using the original temp guage and tube..you are in for a surprise I think..it will not be long enough to reach I am thinking...at least they were not in my car and the LA engine....so it may be time to do a bit of a splice of a longe tube using the ole ice and rock salt trick and go with the modern fittings that will nut right up to your manifold. DO shop around various style of tubes out there..be sure you get one that can be spliced..be prepared to pay about 25.00 for this unit..

Rear dump manifolds? Easy, 1980s small block trucks and vans. Real common mod for LA318s in 68-71 trucks. Supposedly flow better than the original center dumps as an added bonus. You'll have to weld up some emissions nonsense or get some really good pipe plugs. Could use a set for my 69 D100 but too lazy to rework my not leaking dual exhaust until I have to. ;)

Sensor location? Front passenger side top of manifold.

Edelbrock on a 318 huh... don't run more than a 500 cfm carb, 318s can't breathe as is.

IMO I hate those little short rubber fuel lines.....they always seem to crack or bloat. A 78 Ford set a field on fire when it broke....race car was sidelined after 1 lap cuz a piece of rubber on the inside lip was cut and plugged the carb at the inlet..etc...etc...

As far as the manifolds..340's?
