claybill Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 had a miserable weeeknd problem solving a car that bucks going uphill and wont idle or start when hot..#$$%^^ sos. cleaned the carb, added a new pump and checked it blurbing gas out of the line..! took her out for a ride..all was nice, then came the dreaded HILL. I floored it so it would demand a lot of gas...and 7/8 of the way up it bucked and jerked. I slowed down and i let the fuel bowl fill up and teased the gas pedal slightly and continued home like nothing ever happened.. previously i would turn on the electric pump switch and it would fill up quickly for a fast recovery. (but the e.pump puked the other day.) so i am back to square one.. tried some solutions but still have the same symptoms.. it must be the fuel filter connected to the old e. pump.....i should just take it out and put in a nice filter in its place. what do you think.? bill...here is my baby,! RobertKB Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Does your electric pump put gas to a mechanical pump, which is the setup a lot of people have. If so, check the rubber hose between the frame and the mechanical fuel pump. When these get old and weak, they can collapse when there is a big demand by the mechanical pump. I had this same problem with my '53 Plymouth quite a few years ago and that was the solution. Quote
claybill Posted June 20, 2012 Author Report Posted June 20, 2012 good idea robert....will do it tomorrow...also thinking i might raise the float a bit..maybe it is set too low. thanks Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Those carbs they are very sensitive. I was pushing my plymouth on Sunday coming home from the show. I was doing about 65 not used to going that fast and I felt that dreaded slight hesitation every once and a while. I know it's the cab and the fuel delivery. I am going to send the carb to Then and now for a rebuild. I think something is stuck in there or I may have messed up something when I had the top of the carrb off. Bill, you know that convert is heaven .....don't you;) Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 When is the last time you checked your tank fuel sock? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 sock..you in the wrong decade big guy.. Quote
claybill Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 tank fuel sock...????? bucking and hesitation.....first i raised the float a bit.....test...better, but same problem.. second, i ordered a NEW FUEL LINE AT BOTTOM OF FUEL PUMP TO FRAME BLOCK... WITH THIS HESITATION PROBLEM WHY DOES A MOMENTARY HIT OF THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP SOLVE THE PROBLEM..? THE FUEL BOWL IS E M P T Y......STARVING . ELEC PUMP ON ORDER. BILL Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 When is the last time you checked your tank fuel sock? I must be missing something? What is a tank fuel sock? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Filter on the end of the pick-up tube. They call it a sock on an in-tank pump. Quote
190bearplace Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Is the electric pump still in line? It can cause a restriction. It is best to wire the pump to run any time the engine is running Quote
captden29 Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 a sock that i have seen was a brass tube with narrow slits in it that covers the pick up line. it typically removes only large particles and the filter gets smaller ones. if the tank has alot of stuff floating around in the tank the sock can progressively collect this stuff on the slits until the entire sock is covered, and then fuel stops flowing out of the tank. let the car sit for 15 minutes and it will restart as soon as the pump can now move fuel as the particles around the slits will drop off when the car sits still. it is the motion of the car and not whether it is going up or downhill that causes this sock problem. the agitation of the tank causes the crap in the tank to circulate and it eventually collects at the suction point, which is the sock. a car with this issue will idle all day long, but when you drive it the problem will rear it"s ugly head. yes, i have had this experience. capt den Quote
claybill Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 i saw the advertisement just yesterday....USE AS FUEL PUMP OR OCCASIONALLY AS A PRIMER. in my other car i have one only as a primer with a momentary on/off button for priming and trouble spots.. it seems like it would cause a bit of a slowdown, but my pump pumps good when testing it.. bill Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 Ehhhhh, sock, pick up...whatever it sounds like there's a restriction of some kind in either the "pick up"{better folks?}, the gas cap venting, or possibly the fuel is too close to something hot and perculating after she's warmed up good. Yeah, I know...put a "sock" in it bob{me}..... Quote
40P10touring sedan Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 I must be missing something? What is a tank fuel sock? Obviously I'm still too used to 70's cars.... Quote
