I just moved mine from under the seat to the inner fender in my 40. Not that hard a job. I just built a box to fit the battery and cut a hole to fit the box in the inner fender. Then slid it in till it was where I wanted it and welded it in. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.

I believe '40 still had it under the driver's seat and the '41 was the first year for under the hood. What a simple but great improvement.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to figure out if the 41 tray simply bolted to the inner fender and had 1-2 angled brackets holding it level or if it was recessed all or any..and had brackets.

I'm not keen on the whole battery under my backside thing...battery gasses in the car possibly, any given short could be trouble, not being able to seal the oem 40 box off well enough under the seat...things of that nature.

Must be quite a different design than for '33. On the '33 there is a floor piece/cover that goes over the battery. Not a great seal, but there is something there. And the "box" itself is really just a frame with lots of openings so any hydrogen gas that is generated has lots of places to go without getting in the car.

I guess the worst situation would be if the battery exploded during a jump start. I'd rather not think about that...

Just measured the battery tray/box on my 1941 Plymouth, its set into the US drivers side engine bay panel, is 13" long, 7.5 " wide and 7.5" high, it sits in a "hole" cut into this panel and its spot welded onto 90degree folded edges in the panel. There doesn't appear to be any other brackets underneath as this engine bay panel is bolted to both the radiator surround at its front and to the fender/hood side seam........that pic of a battery tray that Bob posted would/could still be correct for mine as that piece would sit onto this "box" that my car has........dunno if this helps.........andyd

Hmmm, well, I dont' have the top cover to the box and said box has a good half inch of gap all around it to easily let any gasses or air in and my bench seat, though maybe yours is different, is not sealed over the whole thing...add I have seen batteries short out, from other than being jumped, and explode...a bad short for example when the terminal broke off my alternator on a different car.

With the factory having changed the location the following year{'41} and on to the engine compartment...that's what I intend to do with my '40, and luckily with the aid of some helpful folks around here who posted pics for me to accomplish this, I can now set about relocationing my battery...many thanks to those who helped!

Brag moment!  I just got completely lucky and bought one NOS for $20 of ebay... mitchell sells em for 130$$$ yikes!

Yes the 40 had the nice underseat tray , plus a frame that held the battery in place and then a top cover that bolted down to the body and tried to keep all the gasses from the cab. Problem with these were the bottom bracket of the tray would corrode and then there was not much to hold your battery from falling out and getting run over...

Then there was  a small lid with thumbscrews to use for filling/charging..

41 used the 957777 tray on the drivers fender well, just bolted to the fender and then you';d use a clamp down set up.
