OldDad67 Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 I'm looking at different gas tank options. I want to put 2 1/2 exhaust pipes out the rear and can't do it with the stock tank. Any suggestions for another tank that might work without a lot of cost and hassle. I want to keep my spare tire. Thanks in advance Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 Seems like someone may have used a Mustang tank.....but had to modify a couple things. (I may be wrong, too.) Quote

Any suggestions for another tank that might work without a lot of cost and hassle. I want to keep my spare tire. Thanks in advance MANY on here have run dual exhaust without body modifications..but if moving the tank is something you wish to consider, room for dual exhaust can be done by removing the spare tire well and welding in a cross hatched panel, moving the tanks to the right some 4.5 inches and you will have more than enough room. Spare tire can be reconfigured to sit center of trunk and angled up over the axle hump on a fabricated pedestal..I have done this to one vehicle..I have centered the tank on another vehicle but the spare was already located elsewhere and the trunk was already flat ('41 Dodge bz cp) making this less invasive..and with yet another P15 (bz cp) I have installed a zero hydrocarbon emission fuel system and controls including donor 22 gallon fuel tank in the trunk. You are only limited by the extend you wish to be invasive to original fit and function.. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 This guy squeaked his left side pipe in between the tank and spring. Quote
james curl Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 Bill Story used a 55-66 Chevrolet pick up tank and set it in the trunk behind the back seat or trunk back wall, where it stands up as it does behind the seat in the pick up. Quote
mrwrstory Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I wanted max room for tailpipes too. Centered too, is my vision. My gas guage and sender didn't work and fixing was beyond my comprehension. This is a '64 Chevy full size passenger car tank. You can buy new reproductions and new sending units. However, you also need a Chevy gauge or Chevy compatible unit. ^ The exhaust is not finished yet and I'm still scratchin my head about the final resolution of the gauges. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Bill what type of setup does the Chevy gauge use? I'm guessing its the more common 1 wire type sender? If so I THINK you can find a 1 wire mopar gauge and swap the face to match the P15 setup. Might have a slightly different needle but it'd get you close. Quote
Harold M Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I ran pipes and mufflers both on the right side then crossed behind tanked to the left work good Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Bill; Must you open the trunk to fuel up? Quote
mrwrstory Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Must you open the trunk to fuel up? Guess I never showed this. It's how it is for the time being. Works very well and I love the "push through" cap. I decided not to build a filler from the outside, for now, so's to avoid body work. Some day, I'll place the filler in the panel where the top terminates and the top corner of the trunk lid. Pretty much through the sheet metal above where it is now.And before anyone asks, the tubing loop you see is the vent line. It goes to the other side of the car, up into the "C" pillar, and then back down to exit at the driver side bumper bracket. No fumes! Quote

I really like the fender mounted gas cap fill spout. One of the things that add charactor to these old cars. Quote
