Bingster Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 I live in Iowa where we get a lot of humidity. Last year my car was stored in a large, closed metal building where it got so humid inside it was wet, and rust formed on certain parts of the car. I now have the car in a metal building that has no door as of yet, and have been covering the car with blue tarps to protect it from wind and rain, then uncovering it in good weather to circulate air underneath it. But I was wondering the wisdom of covering the car in humid weather, if it might not hold it in under the tarp and be worse, especially the interior. Any thoughts? Quote
joecoozie Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 Tarps=bad - they will trap and create more moisture under them. Could also scratch the paint, etc.... Good, breathable car cover=good - this will allow the air to circulate and thus thwart the formation/trapping of moisture. It is worth the investment in a good car cover. Also, I believe there are products for the interior to keep them dry. Maybe someone else can help with that. If the car is being stored and not used often then one of those "bubbles" would work to keep moisture at bay, too. Joe Quote
chopt50wgn Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 Check out California car cover...........they make many different types of covers that can be used outside and inside and will portect the car in all kinds of weaher.......... Like Joe said.........NEVER use any type of plastic tarp to cover a car, even in a dry climate let alone humid conditions. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 whatever cover you choose to drape over your car, do yourself a favor and go a step further by placing a ground tarp under the car as a moisture barrier.. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 My california car cover repells all the water that comes down on it. Somehow while being able to do that its also breathable. You can even put it on when the car is wet and when its done raining everything dries up. Quote
Bingster Posted May 6, 2012 Author Report Posted May 6, 2012 Thanks for the input. The car's finish is not an issue and a California Cover may be more than I need right now. The ground tarp is an excellent idea. Midwest weather is tough on houses and cars. Quote
claybill Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 My cement floor sweats in humid iowa weather too. The moisture comes up thru the floor it seems. I put a plywood platform in garage to drive the car on. No more frame rust. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2012 Report Posted May 6, 2012 your floor was poured without a moisture barrier between the concrete and mother earth..lots of builders neglested this step back in the day.. Quote
