timing gears

I am replacing the timing chain and gears on a 56 230 engine. My new crank gear has no dot on it. I have done a search and it looks like the dot on the cam gear lines up with the third valley(on the grank gear) counting counter clock from the keyway in all the pictures I can find. Can anyone confirm this. How can I tell if I am not one turn off?? THANKS

Where did you buy your gear set? I would ask the vendor why there is no timing mark.

Probing the memory says, Put the crank keyway at 3:00, and imagine a diagonal straight line thru the center of the cam to the edge where the cam gear mark is, and then to the center of the crank.

Anyone?? Help??

Is it possible the crank gear was pressed on the wrong way and the mark is against the engine instead of out where it can be seen? (Not sure it can be put on that way but maybe it is possible...)

I want to say that the crank gear doesn't have a mark on it since the key determines where it sits. Its more a matter of aligning the cam gear mark with the center line of the shafts. I think.

I am putting it on the right way. Don, I have had these parts for years and many cars ago, so don't remember where I got it. I can't see the keyway on the picture you posted. THANKS

Never seen a MoPar flathead set of timing gears with out the dot marks. Match up youir old gear to new and mark it the same if the gears are identical.

Sadly I had tosed the old gears and it was a few days later that I got back to it. From all the pictures I've seen and the ones you guys posted I had it right. The third valley counter clock wise from the keyway. Hope I find time to put it together today. THANKS MUCH!
