valve removal technique?

Recommended Posts

The valve spring needs to be compressed to release the valve keepers. They're a pair of tapered pieces that wrap around the valve stem. Once they're out, release and remove the spring compressor. extract the valve. The 3/8 nut adjusts the clearance between the tappet and valve.

To continue Dave's thoughts- the valve spring compressor pushes up the spring, a magnet helps remove the keepers. Once you release the compressor you can remove the valve and spring. Put each assembly in a ziplock bag and mark its location.

With all the valves out you can lift the lifters up. Clothes pins can be used to hold them up. With the lifters out of the way you can remove the camshaft from the front of the engine. Be careful not to scratch the cam bearings with the cams. Sometimes you have to turn the camshaft to get it to clear.

When you take out the lifters mark them or keep them in order, they should go back on the same cams. They are broken in to each other, if you mix them up it can cause them to wear out in a short time.

For Dads IH engine we rebuilt I took a scrap of 2x4 and drilled holes for the valve stems and used a spade bit to make holes to hold the lifters.

I have a small strong magnet, about the size of a pencil, on an 18" spring stem. It was very helpful in taking out those 'keepers'. They are small, slippery, and shoot like a bullet. I released the valve stem then pulled them out with the magnet.

two thoughts, more applicable if the motor is still in the car.

First, block the 3 oil return holes before starting. Keepers will end up in the pan if you don't.

Second, raise the spring just a bit, knock the valve down free of the keepers, then raise the spring the rest of the way. If you raise it all the way, then tap the valve free, there is no telling where the keepers will end up.
