I was wondering about something and I would like any suggestions on how to get a ownership tittle for an old car. I have a friend who owns a model A ford and I would like to buy it but he does not have a pink slip for it-what should I do?

First issue is that it's a Ford..... each state is different when it comes to title-less cars. In IA you have the DOT bond the title, they asses the value of the car and charge you that amount as a deposit. They then spend awhile looking through records to see if anyone else has registered the car, if it comes back clean they give you most of your money back and they register the car to you. But then in CA when we went to get a title for the '30 we hauled the car to DOT, we told them the vin number and walked out with a title in my name.

I think you have to go to the state patrol so they can verify the VIN # on the frame, then that # is searched and you have to wait 3 years before it will end up in your name if there is no claim or ownership. Look up the Washington State RCW laws and you will see it all.

A friend got a title for his 47 Chrysler NewYorker Convertible this way and he was able to license it too before he got ownership.

If your friend had a title, maybe he can apply for a replacement and then sign it over to you.

Otherwise, I'd go to your local DMV and speak to a manager in person and see what they advise you to do.

The problems associated with securing titles/registration on undocumented vehicles is quickly becoming very huge... The interest in old cars, especially the popularity of Rat Rods and Kit Cars along with the ease of securing info via the internet has changed the game...

I can assure you that in CA and Idaho you will not just walk into the DMV with a paperless vehicle and walk out with registration and a title. California and other states requires the verification of the VIN (serial number) and the placement of same in the correct position on the body, engine and/or chassis. The VIN will then be checked against the numbers shown in the DMV's data base for correctness for that series of vehicle (s).

Don't make the all to common mistake of getting a vehicle all built before you attempt to secure ownership/license on the vehicle, I know to many people that have made that mistake in recent years..

I buy a lot of old cars, and/or portions of cars for some of my many projects, I have learned the hard way to secure titles, etc. before I start any work on a vehicle if I intend to resell the vehicle...

Foot note!!! Any vehicle that has been reported as stolen, no matter how many years ago will be listed in a national data base until the vehicle is recovered.. The same can be true if the vehicle was ever listed as collateral for a loan/lien..
