imearl49 Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 I would like to consider swapping rear ends on my 49 B1C. Is this an incredibly complicated process? Is fabrication of the drive shaft necessary? I have read that the swap can be accomplished with a late model jeep rear end. What ratio is best and what model jeep would I be looking for? Quote

If you have a 1950 or newer, you could possibly get by without the drive shaft modification. There is part called a conversion u-joint with the newer Dodge on one side and a jeep on the other side. I have a 49 and I had to have the drive shaft modified on both ends. Search for another thread called rear axle Dennis Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I swapped on my 53'. process was very simple, kinda pioneered it, or at least had no info. a jeep cherokee is a very good and affordable option,3.55 rear end is a little tall, but good for road use. If I remember correctly, the universals would be the same from 49-53, and a stock cherokee universal was a direct swap. I would do some measuring, but if you need info, feel free to ask! Quote
pflaming Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I called some dismantlers last week, Cherokee rear axles are $550, they recommended Ford Rangers at $250. Haven't decided, don't like to mix my drinks. Quote

Not like there aren't thousands of them in salvage yards. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 As I have read and understand it, cars and light trucks there are three popular series of Spicer U-joints. 1310, 1330 and 1350 I believe they are..the 1310 and 1330 use the same size roller cups but the cross is wider...a conversin joint will allow you to mix and match all of these by series size. Neapco makes these at a affordable cost, the original Spicers are a good bit higher in cost..also the use of internal and external clips come into play for the correct cross you will need. for comparison sakes, most all rear gears in this area are in the 250.00 range at wrecking yards, we have but one pick and pull and the cars that end up there for the most part were fairly stripped by the main wrecking yard before shifting it to the back lot (pick and pull) Quote
wayfarer Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 imearl49 doesn't indicate what his geographical location is so perhaps his yard choices are limited... but I would first check craigslist for parts. There always seems to be someone parting a Jeep or an Exploder. Quote
B1B Keven Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Another great place to check for Cherokee axles is NAXJA. Keep an eye out on your local chapters 'for sale' section. Scroll down to NAXJA chapters: http://www.naxja.org/forum/ Quote
