gas used can be diferent for the metals you are going to use..if you going to mainly use it on the auto body..may want to go with Argon..but if you want to do aluminum and stainless etc probably be best to use Helium..some even say CO2 will work wwell with welding steel and will be the lest expensive..price and such in your area..unknown..pluus like any tank you will wish to own your own and not be subject to a rental fee or having to del with only one company...a trade-in tank is best..smaller but is serviceable by all venders..all my gas/oxy bottles are of this size..serves me well

quick look on here is agood place to start..of course Iknow you are asking what most DIY'ers use but this shows results of materilas you are asking of

I use argon its actually 75% argon 25% c02 I have a 60lb tank and last me a long time I see you are in PA I am in NJ and deal with a GTS they are a local chain. I fortget the actuall fill cost it varies like gasoline but I think around $50.00. I bought a tank a few years back a little over $100 for the empty tank. Below is a link to the supplier I got the tank and gas from. If you buy from them check the web site price brefore you go to the store as sometimes the store has a higher price for a tank but they will sell it for the website price if you ask.

If you are going to weld dirty steel i would go with c02 as it is much cheaper and easier to weld with. it has a little more spatter than stargon (75/25 mix) but is more forgiving with dirt and paint.

I vote for 75% argon 25% c02 mix, works well with most everything....

Just make sure the metal clean and you have a good ground.

I agree with this assessment. The shipyard I work at switched from 75/25 to 100% CO2 as a cost savings, but it took a while to get the quality back where it used to be, and the setup is a little more fiddly with 100% CO2 than it was with 75/25.

I use C25 mix and clean the metal for my lighter car metal projects. Heavy rusty metal projects I don't want to clean much and want excellent deep pentration and good welds-stick farm rod 6010/6011.

This is what I use also for about 25 years now with my little 100 Lincoln Mig.

I always make sure the metal is clean as can be...

6010/6011 doesn't make the prettiest weld, but will burn thru anything.

7018 LoHy rod sure is pretty. 6011 farm rod is ripply (depends on operator too) but is as you know good for pentration and good quality welds-H/Vert and overhead. Monkey gun won't do it properly in not so clean/heavy scale horizontal vert Oh ect. But the OP is asking about the gas. I got off track a little bit with stick!
