pflaming Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 I Removed the door windows today. How does one remove the old glass from the 'bar' across the bottom. I've been in 'search' mode for an hour. Seems I once read some one carefully put some heat to it, to soften the 'tar'. What holds that window in? With those windows out I am going to put some type of sound deadening in. Any suggestions. Could start a new thread, but figure anyone who has removed windows has deadened his doors also. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 I used a propane torch to warm it all up and razor knife to get it all out, along with some muscle. Quote
TheMoose Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Quiet ride makes a kit for sound deadning the doors, I just got one but have not installed it yet. Quote
pflaming Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 I went to a friend's auto shop with my windows. He has a steam box into which you place an object. The box is about 36" x 24". It has a rotating device with pressure nozzels every 6" and its steams and rotates around the object. It GETS HOT! We placed my door windows in there for two hours and then we were able to remove the bottom channels. Didn't need a torch. Also put my spindles in with the glass and now they are clean also. Much easier than sand blasting. Quote
pflaming Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 Today I received my window channels and whiskers from Roberts. Hope I chose the right source. Windows on order. I ordered glass with a soft gray tint, a color that is legal. I need two of those clips for the window slide. Will improvise until I find some. Any last minute suggests are encouraged. Wish me luck, got my marching orders for today. Quote

Restoration Specialties has a ton of those little odd clips. You just don't want to know what I'm getting my glass for...pays to know fellow engineers at glass companies we'll just say. Good news out of that I hope to get dxf files of the patterns to share with everyone. Quote
pflaming Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 ggdad: There are two oval clips on the regulator channel. They are oval about the size of a nickel (5 cent piece in USA ) A simple washer fits the stub, I'm thinking a piece of plastic cut out of a plastic bottle with a hole saw on the slide side, and a snap ring to hold it all in place might work. If not I'll contact the specialty folk. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 Check out C and E clips at your local hardware store. Should be able to find something that'd work. Quote
pflaming Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 Thanks Ed, will look. OT: The creativity of the engineers in the 40's / 50's really intrigues me. These clips made assembly almost fool proof. The clip serves several purposes: (1) it's a glide, (2) it's a fastener, (3) since it's round it cannot be put on wrong and it can rotate and still function, (4) it was probably not to expensive to make. Edit: Breakfast is ready, then to the garage. Cold this morning, 28 degrees!! gonna need my coveralls and wear a cap!!!! Quote

pflaming Posted January 19, 2012 Author Report Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) Installed the window / door channels and whiskers today (among other things). I do not see how Gary's (Roberts) clips can work, so will not fight them but will permanently fix the channels with pop rivits. Question: It is possible to install the channel that the bottom of the window rests in before installing the glass. I'm going to use an adhesive chalking product that is water proof. The product is DAP 3.0 a permanent adhesive caulk. I haven't done it yet, is this too risky? I am planning to extrude that into the channel then set the glass in the chalk/channel. I wonder if one could put in the channel, then the caulk then the glass, roll the window up to set it and leave it for a few days????? Might be an easier way to get that window back in and would perfectly position the new glass. Edit: Going to test this Dap 3.0 caulk on an old window into an old piece of the window channel. Dap did NOT work. I found a glass company here in town, he set the glass for me. He and I are going to see if we can put a non center piece windshield in by mitreing the center edges and seal that. Will update when we do that. Edited March 3, 2012 by pflaming Dap 3.0 test Quote

I need windows for both doors (the big glass pieces not the little vent windows) on my '48 stake and the originals are completely smashed so I don't have anything for a pattern. Quote

pflaming Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 Frankie, I accept your suggestion. If California will let me, I will try to keep what I have. The large crack in the passenger side goes through so maybe have to replace, but the driver's side, the cracks are in the bottom corner and are not full. Enjoy your 'salt' season! And the flox. Quote
Frank Elder Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Paul it is going to be in the 50's to 60's most of this week, and how did you know about my flox habit.....? If you want a V-butt go for it, just not my personal cup o tea. Quote
