I am finally getting close to getting my stock 48 D-24 on the road for the first time in over 37 years (that's how long it has been in storage in different places and 3 different owners--I'm the 3rd). Does anyone out there know of any place or company that can still provide any exhaust components for my car. I tried Andy B. and he does not carry them any longer and Roberts wants an arm and a leg. How about the Pep Boys or O'reilly's or Auto Zone? Are there any generic mufflers out there that will fit. I especially need a tail pipe (everything AFTER the rear axle is gone--rusted away). Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks.... please email me at: kbfrancis77@gmail.com

First....congrats on getting the car to be useable.

Second.......have you visited any muffler shops in your town?

I think these old Mopars originally used an oval muffler, but a round

one can also be used if necessary. Any good muffler shop can bend

a talipipe to go wherever it needs to.

Also = I suspect any auto parts store, NAPA, O'Reilly, etc....may be

able to get a muffler.

Just my thoughts..........

Dodgeball48,

Welcome to the forum.

I put a round muffler on my '48 P-15 (Pigiron) and found it hung enough below the frame I was concerned with bottoming-out, so I put an oval muffler on and you can't see it. Don't buy pipe through the mail because, as Bob T said, you can get pipe anywhere.

There's a Search button on the top of the forum page and if you push it it will open a box where you can enter something on the order of "tail pipe over rear axle". There are threads about it and you might even find measurements there if memory serves me.

I bought mine from Kanter many years ago. For giggles I checked the catalog again a couple weeks ago, they still sell them - stainless steel, mild steel, or aluminized steel. SS is EXpensive, the others are rather steep too - plus shipping. I didn't trust west Texas muffler shops at the time, as they tended to weld their own brackets to the frame whether you approved it or not. But I'd imagine any good shop could bend the stuff for you at a reasonable price nowadays. Many have computer programs with the specs so they don't have to "eyeball" the bends.

You may find an exhaust system on ebay. Here is photo of one

listed for older Plymouths/Dodge, $176 delivered.

My local muffler shop quoted $125 for pipes, without the muffler.

I bought a pipe bender and made my own pipes for less. I still have not

installed a muffler. Stainless exhaust is on ebay also....

The Chrysler 6, Dodge and Desoto from 1938-1948 all used the same muffler which was oval. Napa sold the make called Soundmaster and the number was 156. and Plymouth 42-48 also used the same muffler.

The mopar number for the same as above is 676955.

Marmont muffler is another compnay with the same years as above their number CR46.

Hope this helps.

Poking about in NAPA Online, 675955 does not cross. But searching for 156 turns up thousands of possibilities. Searching within that set for "muffler" returns a Soundmaster muffler with current part number SMU 17886. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=SMU17886_0159496332

I wonder if that muffler is close enough to work....

I used a really long smithys glasspack (speedway/$35) It has a really nice sound with my mostly stock 218". A little quiet at idle but a nice low tone on pickup. I had an all new exhaust run from the header back at my local exhaust shop for $120 and they tucked it up well above the scrape line. Maybe not nut and bolt original but Im happy with it and it seems to me that it is pretty period correct anyway.

I put a glasspack type on my stock engine. I noticed that from the manifold to the muffler the car had 2" pipe and after the muffler was 1 1/2 " pipe. I wonder if that was stock or if someone else put that on. My local muffler shop quoted me $60 to put the new 2" pipe on for me (Including pipe) from the muffler back. :D

Hi Dodgeball48,

I went to my local, small town, single guy muffler shop. He put a new exhaust, muffler, tail pipe and chrome tip on for $114.87. I thought that was pretty reasonable.

Cheers!
