Tim, When my truck got over-spray from a guy painting his fence with rustolem a year or so ago, my insurance wrote a $5800.00 estimate to repaint it. So it depends on the adjuster and the shop but i know around here you would never get a complete paint job for $1500. Most of the cars i paint i spend well over a grand on supplies.

I thought this was an interesting thing........a fellow I know who had been

a state representative in MO told me they do auto restoration at one of

our state prisons. They do it for materials cost only.......but the catch is

you have to be a state employee to have this work done. I don't know

what the quality level of the work is, but it could possibly be good.

He had either one or two cars done, but I haven't seen the finished product.

At least one car was damaged when the tornado destroyed his house.

The car was sitting in the garage, like mine was......but appeared to

have somewhat minor damage from what I could see on a drive-by.

A person might check around with various car owners while attending a

cruise-in or swap meet.....there are usually some guys out there who

are good body men and would work in their spare time.

I would think that the cost would differ....CA prices and rural GA prices are bound to be a little different. Lets face it Doc, CA cost of doing business is higher than most places just because it's CA.

On the other hand Tim, it is my guess that you belong to the lowball club, same as me:eek:you gotta pay to play applies to body work and paint jobs too!

Both of you have the skills to do these things and most of us have to pay or have a 30 footer.

Frankie, location is everything..and we have some of the so called speciality shops even in this area but the work is not consistant with the prices..probably only one shop in the area that is that good..we need to look no further than our one member here that is dealing with fire damage..

paint prices...well I could go to a couple of the high end distributors and pay close to what most other folks are paying also..but there is just no need in doing that..and yes Frankie..I do my own work to the extent that I can...pay to play is something I still do but I feel I get to play a lot more by doing it myself..that is what makes my cars fun..if I farmed it out it would just be another car and have no real meaning to me..and odds are I could only own one maybe two of these cars..whats the fun in that?

My friend next door had his Dodge van painted 7 years ago for $950, dark grey. It was a very good paint job. I wish my painting skills were that good. Last month another friend of mine had his 78 Corvette painted at a shop that does mostly collision repairs, for $2000, GM white. The job came out ok, about the same as the paint job I did on my 38.

Here in this part of Virginia there are several good shops that are not very expensive. Overhead is not so much compare to being in or near a city. One can rent/lease a nice shop reasonable. Weather is fair, so not so much to heat a shop.

I'm not lecturing, I'm just darn jealous that's all....I'll never have those skills, patience or an area to paint in.

I have two very good friends who paint cars for other people. They both charge $30/35 an hour plus materials. Depending on the condition of the car the price varies once the body is stripped of all paint and old bondo. Some take very little work to prepare for painting, some expose a host of problems from paper stuffed into the quarter panel then glassed over to complete rust out of the inner structure that must be repaired correctly to have a good paint job. One car in particular looked good until the top surfaces had the paint removed and discovered the car had been a hail storm. The owner had bought the car new from a dealer and was quite shocked to see the damage that had been covered for the last thirty five years. So you never know what you will find when the paint comes off. These things make the job cost a lot more to correct so the original condition governs the cost in the end.

Hey you think you have troubles, look at the fun I am having with this very creased stretches door.

I am using a porta ram, and duck bill expander. I am going at it slowly, and it is working not bad.

I have to bend the hinges to get door forward, whcih will necessitate the door coming off again, and the hinges pressed to move them.

Rockwood, as you work that out make sure to push that front edge forward as it has been pulled back from the metal going in. do it right and it will walk right out, wrong and it will be a tin can nightmare. That inner structure has also pulled in a small amount also.

I am trying to do just that, but not having any success, not sure if it is a nightmare or not yet

I had this Valiant painted about 3 years ago for $1500 total. A friends uncle moon lights out of his 3 car garage and all I had to do was drive it over. The left front fender was gray and the hood was black when I dropped it off. I wish I'd kept this one.

Well worked at this major dent/crease in this door for a while, not sure if it is coming along, or being ruined for good.

I may need another door, and I know this, but am going to try and save this one, as it is really a rust free door..Some pics for Deez, or any other collision Gurus....
