1lowdown Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 I realize this is somewhat of a purest mopar site but I hve a question regarding upgrading a transmission to a more modern one. I have a 50 Dodge that due to a frozen engine will be undegoing a 318 transplant with an Explorer rearend. The gear ratio on the rearend is around 373:1 and I was wondering if there was an auto mopar trans with OD that would bolt up to the 318. Thanks Apes Quote
TodFitch Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 I realize this is somewhat of a purest mopar site but ... I wonder what forum you have confused this one with. (Sorry, I know nothing about Mopar automatic transmissions so I can't help with your real question.) Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 yes..you have two choices..there is a standard tranny out there found in the feather lite/miser cars..these were built for mileage..or you get the later trunk/van oriented A500 or A518 just be sure you get the correct coded one..not he later model electronic controlled...get the one with the RH letters..R is rear wheel drive..H is hydraulic shift opoints..no electronics..but you do get an electrical lock out on the OD...it will always default to OD as the soleniod drops out with key off.. I have the A500 in my 51 Plymouth and I have another one sitting by for hopefully the coupe build.. these were intorduced in 1989 and hydraulic shift I think continued through 1994 or there about..shame is they never made it to the car..the last of the rear wheel drives cars for 89 were mostly equipped with 2.32 rear gears Quote

I have been playing with an idea to cut off the bell-housing and mate one to the factory bell housing and crankshaft of a flathead. I know of a racer trans outfit in the South that does this kind of thing all the time for the racers and I think it would be a natural fit if I can work it all out. I would like to be able to do it my hanging it off the back of the bell just like the M6.... Thoughts? James Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 Jim..I know on my computer at work I have this actual weight of a 904 with torque convertor and at least 50% fluid..I actually weighted every piece of the front shetmetal, bumpers brackets, radiator etc etc..Weight wise..a modern V8 and automatic is just a bit less than the flattie and stock trans.. I will try to find this weight tomorrow and let you know..as compared tothe M6..I know that the M6 is quite havey but not as long as the A518 but the later has the advantage of aluminum Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted August 18, 2011 Report Posted August 18, 2011 just in case someone out there really cares to know..these are my findings.. "Purple"]Front bumper with both overriders and center guard and both brackets...45lb Hood less trim and rear brace..but with latch...27 lb Doghouse without radiator but all else there...150 lb Mopar 904 Automatic with converter and about 1/2 oil 157 lbs Small Block Mopar 273/360 estimated weight from a Mopar website...525 lbs... NOTE: (Appears the combined weight of a small block and 904 will yield approx 682 lbs and combine that with the estimated front metal/battery/radiator and fluid weight...we have a total suspension load of: 987 lbs...[/color] Quote

James Race guys often spend thousands of dollars 'trying' to gain some slight advantage over the competition...been there, got the t-shirt, left alot poorer... How about just using an adapter? www.qualityengineeredcomponents.com Quote
