Bingster Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Okay. I need to make a decision on these brake cylinders and push pins. The options are: 1) Resleeve old cylinders and use old pins 2) Buy new cylinders from Napa, O'Reilly, etc. and use their pins. 3) Buy Bernbaum or similar old style cylinders and use old pins. Now, re-sleeving seems to be the best way to go. Right or wrong? We can assume the Napa type cylinders with shorter push pins will work fine. I bought Bernbaum front cylinders a couple years ago before I knew anything about the hobby, and I have read where they may have a tendency to leak. I know one person who tossed them and had the old resleeved. I'm thinking of doing the same. Only thing is, where to get the old pins if the old cylinders are resleeved. Or, buy new cylinders from Napa and use the newer style pins. After degreasing, priming and painting all my brake parts, I don't want brake fluid leaking all over them. So what is the best approach? desoto1939 Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 I would say resleave your old cylinders. When the cylinders are resleved the old push pins should still work because you ahe the orginal cylinder. Can you get new old stok cups and then resue the same pins. Rich Hartung Quote
oldmopar Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Unless the old pins are damaged you can use them with the new cylinders. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 White Post Restorations (usually can find them in Hemmings) does a sleeve job. I checked with them sometime back....price wasn't too bad. However, I saw recently that the owner of White Post died....don't know if that will effect the operation of that business now. You would have to call them and check. There are other places that do the sleeving as well. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 Try Apple Hydraulics. They resleeved my master cylinder. Quick, reasonable, and a heck of a nice job. Quote

ozzie1949 Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 (edited) I don't mean to hijack this thread but I am at the exact same point and pretty much had the exact same questions. I would like to add the question, does anyone make new springs for these years? Can somebody look at this kit and see by apperance that it is the correct parts. Not a bad deal since it comes with new hoses. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/6-Wheel-Cylinders-Brake-Hoses-1946-47-48-49-50-DeSoto-/220785921963?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3367ddcfab Edited May 21, 2011 by ozzie1949 Quote
48mirage Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 If I remember right I did a little research and I think this is the back door out of Kanter wharehouse. Quote
Bingster Posted May 21, 2011 Author Report Posted May 21, 2011 Okay, that is the ebay vendor who makes the push pins, as you can see in the photo, but won't sell them separately. What do you mean by back door of Kanters? Quote
RobertKB Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 Okay, that is the ebay vendor who makes the push pins, as you can see in the photo, but won't sell them separately. What do you mean by back door of Kanters? I have lots of used pins very similar to those shown. Can you give me the length and other dimensions like the size of the slot and I can see if these will work. Mine are 1 11/16 in length. I have provided a picture for you also. I have lots of return springs for the 10" drums also. PM or email if interested. Quote
48mirage Posted May 22, 2011 Report Posted May 22, 2011 I believe the Montville NJ address it the location of Kanter's Wharehouse. It is only a couple of miles from their Boonton headquarters address. If you look at the rest of the items sold by this ebayer it looks a lot like the Kanter catalog. I believe you will find that the things that Kanter sells aren't made by Kanter. A lot of their stuff comes out of china. Quote
