thrashingcows Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 I need some advice from the knowledgeable. When I seperated the driveshaft from the rear axle I didn't pay much attention...since it was all caked up with 60 years of grease and grime. Anyway today I went to re-install the drive shaft to the rear axle and things just didn't look right, especially since they are mostly clean now. Have a look see..... Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 12, 2011 Author Report Posted May 12, 2011 And a couple more.... So tell me this is all wrong and that a previous owner cobbled this together. Quote
4852dodge Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Looks like something got changed. Thats not how they should attach. Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 (edited) 1941-52 American built Chryslers and Desotos used cross type u-joints with 2 having the bolt down wing caps. Is this what you are referring to, the u-joint fastener type? I had 2 pairs of these NOS, and had a hard time selling them last year. They are still available, but getting espensive, there isa supplier in the Vancouver area who may have them. Rovon Auto Parts . Edited May 12, 2011 by Rockwood Quote
1941Rick Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 It is obvious that either the flange or the u-joint are wrong.....was that how you got it? Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Looks Mickey Moused to me. It's a wonder the driveshaft didn't fall off. Tom Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Trade in them Nash caps for some Dodge units.. Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 13, 2011 Author Report Posted May 13, 2011 It is obvious that either the flange or the u-joint are wrong.....was that how you got it? Yep that's obviously how it was run by a previous owner. And by the amount of gum and crud on it I'd say it ran like that for years! Looks Mickey Moused to me. It's a wonder the driveshaft didn't fall off.Tom After seeing it all cleaned up, and the little edge of the lock washers that are holding things in place, I too wonder how it made it all those years like that. Could someone measure their flange on their diff. I have a feeling this is the incorrect piece. It just seems bigger then the pictures that were posted. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) I'll try to help you.....what you have is correct---so far....! Bob Edited May 13, 2011 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 Well here is the cap retainer that clamps the caps to the yokes. Did you look at the other end of your driveline to see what it looks like? Sorry no flash for better pic's. Bob Quote

Bob Well I feel like a dolt...I forgot that I had removed those retainer plates....DOOOHHH!!! Found them in the parts washer. Thanks for the help...and pics Bob!! Quote
Niel Hoback Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Great news, Brian. Now I know it ain't just me! Quote
thrashingcows Posted May 14, 2011 Author Report Posted May 14, 2011 Still think the yoke is not correct though, since the cups on the U-joint are threaded for a bolt to go in to. But at least it will be a little more secure with the plates holding things together. Quote

But at least it will be a little more secure with the plates holding things together. Those threaded U-joint caps are wrong for the yoke! Just noticed it! DeSoto's don't narrower threaded caps on your original yoke. I looked it up in the shop manual and parts book. They don't show threaded DeSoto U-joint caps from 1941-52. They do show the 2 retainer plates securing a much wider non threaded U-joint wing cap-2 use to the rear and front flange. Those threaded caps might be off a 30's Gm or Nash as Tim said or who knows!
