TJM70's_48 Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 I need to pull the rear drums; Previous Owner did not have manual and did not know how to change brakes. I also have to replace some lines. I have been reading on forum regarding technique and I do have shop manual and Motors Manual. All I am missing is the puller. Is this one from JC Whitney a good choice? http://www.jcwhitney.com/3-arm-hub-puller/p2007845.jcwx?TID=productads&gclid=CJmegIKs2acCFULf4AodaxmJCg If not, can anyone point me toward a suitable one? Thanks, Tom Quote
roadworthy Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 I use this FWD axle flange puller from Autozone's tool rental. Quote
John Reddie Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 Those drums can sometimes be really stuck. Ideally, the best type of puller for these drums has the piece that fits on the bolt end that you can hit with a hammer to tighten it like the one pictured here. John R Quote
John Reddie Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 Sorry. Here is the link for the tool. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-Wheel-Hub-Puller-Rear-Brake-Drum-Remover-Tool-/400203154720?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item5d2df78520 Quote
TJM70's_48 Posted March 19, 2011 Author Report Posted March 19, 2011 Thanks guys...I need to get one soon. Quote
busycoupe Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 I bought a puller 2 years ago like the one John posted, shown in the red case. It was made in China, but very robust. The only trouble I had with it was that the threads on the black screw post were coated with either paint or some kind of oxide finish. The finish prevented it from threading smoothly into the puller. After working on the screw post with a wire wheel all was well. The puller now works great. Dave Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 I would go for the rental one because how often do you remove your rear drums? I think I rented one for my Dodge and it didn't cost and arm and a leg. Some tools you use once and then it up on the shelf and then 10 years latter down the road you look for that special tool and walla where did it go??? Quote
RobertKB Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Sorry. Here is the link for the tool.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-Wheel-Hub-Puller-Rear-Brake-Drum-Remover-Tool-/400203154720?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item5d2df78520 I have one very similar to this and it works great. It is a good price, too. Quote
1950 Special Deluxe Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Here is the one I bought. Very similar and a little cheaper. http://sastool.com/product_info.php?products_id=226&osCsid=6ff6e21a7bac5878640c887b925e18ca Quote
1940plymouth Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 You want a good heavy duty one, as they are a bugger to get off Quote
TJM70's_48 Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 I may see what Advance Auto has in the way of loan a tool or possible rental; if I can't get any results, maybe I'll buy one of my own that I would possibly be more confident to hit a little harder than someone elses tool. I have to do 4 drums...I have an extra rear axle I picked up last summer and I am going to disassemble it first for practice and to familiarize myself with the setup. Then I'm hoping to strip it down for the parts and save them in case I need them - drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, gears...and so on - whatever I can remove. Probably will scrap the housing, though. If I end up buying one, thanks for the good leads here. Not knowing what I'll need, it helps me to prevent making a mistake on the wrong thing altogether. Thanks, Tom Quote
William Davey Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 The local Advance Auto has a free rental program. You "buy" the tool with the understanding that you'll bring it back in less than 30 days. I rented a drum puller and a slide hammer to remove my rear drums and axles. Took both tools back the following weekend - no problems, no questions. Quote
1950 Special Deluxe Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Be nice to them, I could not find a rental store that knew what I was talking about when I was looking to beg/ buy/ or borrow one. Good work Quote
grady hawkins Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I have one of the J C Whitney pullers but it just was not robust enough to gt the hub off Quote
Greg F Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I too bought the hub puller from SAStool.com. I have yet to try it as it just arrived today. About $55 with shipping and got it fast. Let you know if it works..Greg Quote
