Don Coatney Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I recently bought a movie from AMAZON titled STOCK CARS OF THE 50'S/60'S. This is a 4 disc set and all four discs were great. While watching I came to realise what went wrong with stock car racing. The cars are simply no longer stock cars. What a thrill it is to watch real door slamers racing on the beach at Daytona. I recommend this DVD set even though one disc is all about 62 shiverlays and how much better they were than the competition. http://www.amazon.com/Stock-Cars-50s-60s-Misc/dp/B000NJWIQW/ref=sr_1_3?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1299868751&sr=1-3 Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 originally that was the concept..race on Sunday, sell it on Monday as the cars were run straight off the showroom floor...little gas..lots of luck and tires tires tires..you were in business.. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Many Mopar Flathead 6s racing in these DVDS? Quote
PatS.... Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 How many fans would want to watch a bunch of 4 or 6 cyl front wheel drives screaming around the oval at 96 mph?? The Daytona 500 would have to be the Daytona 100 because the cars would not last 500 miles wide open. The old days of "stock" car racing were indeed the best. Quote

However, kids of today can't relate with the old days because they can't get behind the wheel of one of those cars on Monday. I think that is why things like drifting and movies like Fast and Furious do so well. Young guys relate to those cars and can emulate them with their own. NASCAR may well have to go to the cars you describe at some point to keep a fan base as those of us who think real race cars have to be fire breathing monsters disappear. As for the cars lasting 500 miles, I don't think that is a problem at all. I hope it doesn't come to that for those of us that remember the glory days, but if you are not progressive, you are history................Tim For modern performance cars being fun. Check this out Quote
Robert Horne Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 I remember going to the dirt track races of the 50s in W.Va. with my Uncle. The cars were of the 30s. Now, I go to the local dirt track to watch. There is a class for kids, with 4 cylinders. They are more fun to watch than the faster cars. Dale Earnhart's grandson was racing there a few years ago, until he moved on up to other classes, and other tracks........ Quote

Check this out I agree but I still think it was a sad day when they started racing Toys in NASCAR. The biggest problem with NASCAR today though, is all the rules and how badly they enforce them. Too much obvious favortism for certain drivers. By the way, Ken Block has to be one of the most talented drivers out there! I love rally racing but they just don't show it enough here in the states. hkestes41 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Remember going to Ozark Speedway, 66 Speedway, Monett, Razorback, Muskogee and others around the MO, OK, AR area with my dad when I was but a wee lad. He built and raced his own car for years before he started driving for a gentleman named Don Grant. When he built his own cars they always had Mopar drivetrain no matter what the body was. Once he started driving for Don it was Chevy power as it was Don's car and he was a Chevy guy. Here are a the only pictures I have left of those early days. Quote
