Mark D Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Second post of the day, hope you're not getting sick of me. So driving the car this weekend for the second time and i see that the speedo doesn't stay steady at any speed. Driving at what I think is about 45mph, and the speedo has a full 10mph swagger. Could this be a simple fix? Lube the existing speedo cable, or replace and start new? Love the fact that so much of my car is original, but when it's time, its time... Thoughts? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Lube the speedo cable and the speedo unit and your bounce will likely go away. Merle Quote
SKIPPER1 Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Had the same problem with my speedometer cable jumpng and "whirring". disconnected cable from back of speedo guage, dropped a few drops of 3 in 1 oil into the cable, reconnected cable back to the guage and "walla" not more problems. greg g Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 powered graphite is the preferred lubricant. Becareful when you pull the cable out that you control it so as not to soil your interior. There is an oil cup on the back of the cable retainer use a light machine oil. Quote
Mark D Posted March 8, 2011 Author Report Posted March 8, 2011 Ok, another good bit of info.... Just enough to make me dangerous under the dash. As soon as I get back to Mass, I'll grab a tube of graphite and start fixing the swagger. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 I'll jump in with concurrence. Mine did the same thing for a while (more emphatic the colder it got - in El Paso of all places). Simple removal of the cable core and good lube with LIGHT lubricant does the trick. Check for kinks in the cable housing, too. Quote
