Alshere59 Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) Decided to paint my inside window trim on my 50 Plymouth. Ran into two questions. 1. The fuzzy stuff along the bottom inside edge is called a window sweep correct? If it is will rivets attach it? The original was attached by staples. I don't think my staplers will go through steel. So rivets a good choice? 2. The chrome bars on the trim had small spring steel clips attaching them. Which I dremeled off to paint them as they are not meant to come off by any other method I know of. So what is the little spring steel clips called. Ya know They fit around the posts on the trim but won't come off. Found a lot of clips and a whole bunch of people that know what I am looking for but what do I search for. Trim clips, fasteners ???? A link is good also. Ok more than two questions, but some times the small things drive ya nuts. Any ideas? Edited January 19, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 in lieu of the staples, I dupliated the old piece with a section of new, placed in position and drilled the little holes then used stainless safety wire to mimic the staples from the factory..wire lays a lot flatter than the rivets will and does not alter the original garnish molding..as for the door side, do you have the small holes drill for the V-spring clips? Am thinking this is the style..if so that is easily accomplished by upgrading to a different clip size and style, enlarging the hole from 3/16 to a 1/4 and simplyly plaing the new clip on the fuzzy, insert the clips in the larger hole then crimp the clip to the fizzy for solid staking of the wiper..quick and easy..very effective..easily removed if needed without damage..just a tad off from factory..best part..no glues at all anywhere.. Alshere59 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) Thanks Tim The safety wire is a good idea. The clips that I do not know what they are called. Is for the chrome trim piece on the inside. Basically a small rectangle with a hole in the center with slots extending from the hole. Push them on the post extending through the window trim and they grip well. Replacing them after cutting them off is a problem if you do not know what they are called. Same clip but different size for the letters spelling Plymouth on the hood. Seen them on every thing for years, finding them has been a journey. Edited January 19, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
Young Ed Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Bring a piece of the chrome to a hardware store and you should be able to duplicate that clip. I found both the rectangle ones and some circle ones. The circle ones held much better on my p15 trim. Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks. Ill hit the hardware stores. I tried one but focused on all of the parts stores. Need to think out of the box more. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 those clips are found at about every hardware store..sold by size..now I know the pece you are talking about..as Ed says..take a sample chrome piece and match them up..local hardware store kinda gouge you on these..often 15 to 30 cents a hit..last ones I got I bought 10 for a dollar..bit more fair..I bought 10 each of the items he had in stock just to have on hand at the last swap meet where a guy was selling this sort of stuff.. Young Ed Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 If you get the round ones a nutdriver or socket the same diameter works great to push them on. I used I think a 3/8s nutdriver. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 You might want to try an auto upholstery place for those push-on retainers. That's where I got some a while ago. They're used to attach dome lights after replacing the headlining. Quote
Alshere59 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks for the suggestions. Should be able to hit a number of places this weeknd and get a few. Quote
