My P15 bumpers are rusted way beyond rechroming. Any I have seen are quite costly for my no/low buck driver. Question 1. If I paint them how do I get old chrome off; 2 When searching what other bumpers moght fit 3 Anyone done any custom bumpers on theirs. Trying to keep it as stock looking as I can but it's not a restoration.

Quite a few auto paint companies sell "adhesion promoters" to help paint

stick to smooth surfaces. One such product is "Bulldog", it works pretty well.

Otherwise, I would grab an air grinder with first a 24 grit disc grind the chrome

off. I would follow up with a 36 / smoother grit to remove the deep grind

marks. Then prime / sand / prime and paint. Good luck.

I don't know that I would try to get all the chrome off, but would try to

make it smooth as possible by grinding/sanding. Then go with some

type primer, etc.

Also you might watch ebay for some seller in your part of the country

where shipping would be less, or you could go pick the item up.

Before I got mine redone, I ran them for a couple years painted satinblack hammer tone paint. The rear bumper was pretty bad, I hust sanded of the bulk of the rust and worked the edges of the remaining of the loose chrome back to where it was well stuck. I used rustoleum primer and Hammertite Hammered finish paint. It held up well untill I pulled the bumper and sent it out for replating. The place that did the job, did a nice job on restoring the bumper to its origial appearence. It was heavily rusted in spots but not bent so they said they could handle it. They were right.

About 2/3 of the chrome is gone and the rest is peeling or still on good. The areas with no chrome are sriously rusted and pitted. Do any earlier or later models fit ?

With the peeling chrome, it sounds like the bumper was not prepped properly

when it was chromed last time. You can try to leave some of the chrome on

and sorta level it out, but......the chrome will probably keep peeling. Hence my

suggestion to grind it off. What ever works for you.... I would suggest using

some type of a two part primer.

try talking to a chrome shop about removing left over chrome.they used to always put parts to be rechromed in a tank with electrical leads reversed to first remove old chrome and nichel plating.maybe cheap way to prepare them for paint.? them you could just use bondo/high build primer and paint to match car or contrasting color.?

a nother thought-- check out brizbumpers.com. tthey make polished alum. bumper in 3 rib.4 rib, 5 rib for many cars, and reguarily make custom bumpers. best part is that they are cheaper than rechroming stockers.many are listed at $215.00. i must mention on the web site no prices are listed, but if you google briz, schroll down and see their dealers, who do list prices. i checked one of them at; yogis.com. their price was below list at $193.50.

i don't know your location but "yogis" is in iowa. find a dealer nearest to you if interested. by the way, these bumpers are undrilled. make fit your brackets.

just my thoughts. happy hunting!
